First of all, the tagnira is my creation (i.e. copyright to Anomalous Fox). I would really rather people ask for permission before doing anything with it (e.g. drawing, animating, etc.). Drawing made with Micron pens.
Anyway, the tagnira is an aquatic canid that I use in some of my fantasy worlds, specifically Maiara. It is most closely related to the nerakai (in turn closely related to foxes). All nera are noted for their more sharp, blade-like teeth as well as their more aerodynamic skull and some abnormalities in their spine.
Their eyes are typically a little larger than most other canids, and they have a second eyelid that allows them to see underwater by compensating for the different refractive index of water. Nera have highly developed ears that are very sensitive, replacing most of the functions of their whiskers (which are thus reduced in size and quantity). Unlike other canids, they do not often rely heavily on their sense of smell except for territorial and occasional hunting purposes.
Tagnira, although they are a little more heavily built than most canids, are still lighter than the shashi (which are also nera, but which have protective plates). They do not have the poison glands found in the other nera, but they have webbed paws.
Their most notable specialization is the tail, which is more muscular than in other canids. The end forms a fin, the leading edge and ribs of which are formed by hyaline cartilage. This is held together by a thin layer of elastic cartilage. It can be extended by muscles, but when the muscles relax, it retracts along the tail (though it is still visible, it does not get in the way and it does not affect their hydrodynamics as much).
While tagnira are capable of hunting on land, they are slower and less agile than wolves. They are, however, excellent swimmers. Their best attributes in the water are their acceleration and agility. They often hunt in coastal waters, picking up small creatures such as fish by ambush and bringing them onto the shore to eat.
Could go on, but eh. You get the idea by now, right?
