Here's to a real peacemaker. When the Soviet Union and the "Cold War" (at that time) ended, for the first time I felt that I would never have to worry about getting nuked or WW3 ever again, and that there would be a real chance of peace in the world.
It's too bad his current successor has gone and undone all of it.
Mikhail Gorbachev: 1931-2022
Former leader USSR. Peacemaker/Reformer, Nobel Laurette.

There's only one real person left, from the top political positions, that can really tell any kind of story from that era...Naina Yeltsina, Boris Yeltsin's wife, who is 90 (as of Sept. 1, 2022, the day this message was written).
Once she passes, it would mean that Mikhail, his wife Raisa, Boris, Naina, Ronald Reagan, his wife Nancy, George H.W. Bush, his wife Barbara, and the so-called 'Gang of Eight' (the ones who wanted the USSR to go back to strict central control) will all be gone.
If there were a tontine between those who defended democracy and true freedom, Naina would be the one who'd get the tontine item.
Still though, while Mikhail was FAR from perfect, at least he admitted such, and didn't carry any airs about him. He was the only former leader of the USSR who embraced his humanity, flaws and all. He did the best he could.
Events overtook him, but he didn't run and hide from anything, come what may. It's hard to disrespect that.

Us Germans have special reasons to be thankful for his politics, he was one of the main factors the 1989 revolution was a peaceful one. In fact, lots of eastern europe countries do recognize the massive opportunity towards freedom Mikhail Sergeyevich gave them. Sadly, in his own country, he is looked upon with disdain and outright hate.
in him the world has lost one of its greatest peacemakers.
he made the end of the Cold War possible, the peaceful revolution in the GDR and also that many countries of the Warsaw Pact and former areas of the USSR were able to go their own way into the future.
Unfortunately, the old saying that the prophet is not valid in his own country has proven to be true at him.
Many of the problems that are attributed to him there would very likely have happened even without his reforms, since they often had their causes much further back in history...
