This is on white duck cloth, and was designed in Embroidery Magic 2. If I remember right, this design contains about 19000 stitches.

This was a challenge: how do I capture all those gradients with solid-colored thread? I went with the "90's dialup gif" technique and just chose a couple of spots to highlight with a lighter color.

Details are still pretty tough to incorporate, since the fabric likes to shift around a lot.
