Growing up, I was an enormous fan of Garfield. I read all of the comics a million times over, leaving the library every other week with a huge stack of Garfield books. Garfield.com was in stiff competition with Homestar Runner in terms of my time spent online. I watched the show, I had a Garfield plushie, and even though I wasn't allowed to drink coffee (for religious reasons, no less), I would still make myself some hot chocolate and pretend I was drinking coffee just like Garfield did. I literally wanted to defy God in the name of Garfield.
Naturally that never really leaves you, so even if my appreciation of Garfield is a little more distant these days it's still very much apparent. Some of you may be familiar with those little McDonald's Garfield mugs that were made back in the 70s-80s, just cute little glass mugs with dumb Garfield designs on them. I had one for a while, depicting Garfield and his friends on a seesaw in a decidedly Garfield-esque situation of his own fat ass not being able to be lifted by everyone else. I owned one of these for a while, and the gimmick was that if you drank milk in my household you HAD to use the Garfield mug or there would be dire consequences. Why milk? I dunno, it just worked. And I loved it.
Come to find out, however, that being from that time period those glasses actually have unacceptable levels of chemical/radioactive shit in them... God bless. Not that it puts you in serious danger just having the glass, but out of an abundance of caution, I decided it would definitely be best to just stop using it. It was really upsetting though, I loved that little mug. It sounds silly but it really did disappoint me more than I'd care to admit.
Well..... Now we arrive here! For my birthday, and as a complete surprise, my wonderful friends crafted this loving tribute to that exact mug design using our characters as stand-ins for the Garfield crew. They turned it into a real mug too, and got extra high quality stickers to boot! The cherry on top, he even made this tremendous advertisement for the mug, using the Garfield font and everything. He claims it was easy and "no big deal", but I swear to God the quality on this is just so palpable. It's insane how much attention to detail there is on all of this.
It makes me feel so whole having such a loving gift, I just love everything about it. Thank you guys ❤️
