150 watchers: 007-009 Squirtle line
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers
HollieHyena
My 7th watcher was HollieHyena, honestly the watcher I’d been most looking forward to, since I was already working on this piece where she is at the center. It was interesting to see how many watchers “got in” between each of the members of that picture. I was sort of expecting them to all land in at once since I sort of told them all I had created an FA at once, but of course they were varying degrees of busy.
If Gary/Blue got Venusaur, who should get Squirtle? The Player Character of course! Green (as she’s known in the manga) or Leaf (as she’s known in the remakes) is the female playable character from Fire Red/Leaf Green. I know that’s not technically Gen I, but Green dates back to the beta with concept art suggesting she might’ve been a recurrent second rival who occasionally teamed up with you (something we didn’t see until later), or an early version of the Lass trainer class based on the Beauty trainer class
That muzzle angle was surprisingly hard and is the reason why this is the biggest drawing of this series so far and why Squirtle still looks rusehd. It does worry me how bear-like it ended up looking, which is ironic because I can’t draw bears. I also fretted way too much about the body type: Green has an hourglass-type body, Hollie does not.
Kittybird
Kittybird was there when I told Hollie and the others I had created an FA and practically jumped at the opportunity to watch me. I can’t tell you how happy it was to see someone that enthusiastic over little old me and for that I am infinitely grateful.
Who needs Pokéballs when you have boxes? KB, as we call her for short, loves boxes! And I’m sure if she had a Wartortle to raise, it would grow to love them too.
I’ve drawn Kittybird once before and I remember being unsatisfied with the shape of her beak. I think I got it down this time, but I’m instead dissatisfied with her paws. In my defense, I didn’t have a good reference. Incidentally, is Kittybird covered in fur or feathers? The reference I have seems to suggests feathers all over but I drew a mix to make her more of a canonical griffin.
Two notes about this drawing: first, this is the size I should be drawing everybody for the simple reason that It’s what fits on my laptop screen. I don’t need to zoom out or scroll which means the sketch can be done fast, which is the goal here. Second, I spent way too long on KB’s breasts here, only to erase them because they are hidden by Wartortle’s head. With these sketches I work opposite to my normal workflow: I'm sketching what’s closest to the camera first to avoid wasting time with things that are behind other things (Normally, I start with what’s farthest for better grounding/realism, which is what I fell back to, here)
ArisuVixen
As was Arisu, as we call her for short, which also made me very happy.
Arisu is a cute little fox girl who loves playing in the mud. I don't doubt that, with a Blastoise, she'd be making a lot more mud to play in.
I’ve also drawn Arisu before (twice, actually, but the other drawing was never finished). Her character is challenging to draw, but she’s a great person
I’m not sure I correctly conveyed the stickiness of the mud in this picture… or the motion… or whether there’s just too much going on in it… but I did do everything I wanted with it so I’m satisfied
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
