Rish Tree | Alien (Other) | Sci-fi/Fantasy
★ Side-Project ★
This tree, unlike most of the others you'll find here, are adapted for cold weather. Its leaves are light and frilly yet cold-resistant, and its branches point downwards to allow it to shed snow more easily without it weighing down and breaking them.
This tree gets its name from the Arabic word for 'feather' - risha. The leaf stems are flexible enough to bend and slough of snow during snowfall, and when they do this the tree appears to be shaking itself the way a bird might shake its feathers clean.

What is Kaleida?
Kaleida is a worldbuilding project without a storyline or individual characters. Most of my clients come to me with stories and characters and treat worldbuilding as an after-thought, so I'm doing the opposite and focusing solely on my worldbuilding. This species is a result of my research on how to create an alien ecosystem, which I wrote as a blog series. Read it here.

Thank you very much! I plan to get to work on the polar and tundral areas of Kaleida in the future but for now this one was one of those anomalies that Taleea drew that I can't really weave into an ecosystem yet. Still, I'm looking forward to getting to work on the cold regions - in addition to this pretty tree I know I have a badass 2-legged apex predator and a giant flying creature to factor in.
Thank you! Taleea did a great job with this, and I look forward to adding more detail to this plant just as soon as I can start working on the rest of the ecosystem it lives in.
The whole "finding yourself in a different world" trope is enjoyable for sure! With Kaleida, the concept isn't magical - it's that Kaleida is a global equivalent of a national park and needs staffing to research its ecosystem so it can be properly protected, plus protectors (although admittedly, their job tends to be sporadic - there isn't always much for them to do). I'm looking forward to opening up Kaleida so people can have stories written in it, do YCHs, that sort of thing!
