It was difficult to adjust. Those old monuments of the ancient kangaroo gods were sat peacefully and undisturbed for thousands of years. Forgotten by humanity for so long, that they too had forgotten the pesky humans.
The gods were defensive, at first, once new pests started invading by boat, trying to remove the only surviving monuments from the island. The gods really did not care for humans, but they hated defilement of their only remaining tribute. Retribution was swift, but the creation of new marsupials did not dissuade more aggressive advances of mankind in their stubborn pursuit of 'ideal vacation real estate'.
The gods would only speak to kangaroos, and the humans would not listen to anyone. Thus entered a mediator. Dr. Flyer had her own controversial thoughts of where humans are best suited, but she and her corporate entity, Sunny Roo uLtd could at least understand human behavior, and they shared common ground with the gods.
The gods did not care about land anyways, and so humans were allowed to build as they please. In exchange, the humans must not to defile their sacred avatars anymore. To sweeten the deal, Dr. Flyer enhanced those statues with special smelly chemicals, so that punishments could be doled out faster and with no question of cause and effect.
Individual humans, of course, do not always honor agreements. But the Winds of Change have strong currents, and the ancient kangaroo gods are pleased with a good show.
