Case Alaska 261 Corruption + retaliation
January 30, 2000
Alaska Airlines flight 261 departed at 1:37 pm from Puerto Vallarta, ascended to a cruising altitude of 9450 meters (32,000 ft) the crew consisted of Captain Ted Thompson, 53 years old and First Officer William "Bill" Tansky, 57 years old. with 88 passengers,
when they were in the air the stabilizer was stuck up, causing the tip of the plane to tilt slightly down, they disengaged the autopilot and flew it manually pulling the control stick back to prevent it from descending. several times they tried to unjam the stabilizer until the stabilizer tilted more, falling for a few minutes to 7924 meters (26.000 ft) the pilots got it under control and decided to divert to Los Angeles, but first they had to be sure that they could control the plane.
At 4:19 PM when they were about to head to Los Angeles airport the stabilizer tilted abnormally upwards, the nose of the plane went down violently and in the process it broke the elevators which was the only way by which the pilots could stabilize the plane (as shown in the comic I made) at 5486 meters (18000 ft) in desperation the pilots inverted the plane and pushed the control stick but to no avail because the plane was out of control after 60 minutes of frightening, the flight 261 crashed disintegrating in the pacific at almost 400 km/h (250 miles per hour).
All 88 people died on the spot, there were no survivors.
The investigation proceeded to explain why the MD-83 was not properly lubricated in the scheduled maintenance of the horizontal stabilizer assembly.
alaska did not perform proper maintenance on their planes, forged signatures, bribed personnel to keep quiet. one of the chief mechanics was suspended because he tried to warn the company that this could happen.
