What if, following the success of Super Smash Bros on the N64, Nintendo release a Smash Bros game for the Gameboy Colour? What if it expanded on the original, being more like Melee in some ways? Then the menu music, might just sound like this.
Another one of those ideas which made me think of what could have been. Battling over link cables with Smash Bros would have been even more awesome than battling and trading pokemon back in the day...although I doubt such a setup would actually work on the GBC...ah well.

I used actual Gameboy samples in a soundfont, you can't get any more authentic than that unless you record them directly from a GBC, which isn't the best of ideas. The difference in quality and tone is likely a result of not being limited by the GBC's speaker. I'm using synth samples taken directly from the sound chip rather than recorded from the speaker, so that's probably why it sounds off.
I'm mostly just theorising about it but certainly if you compare playing an mp3 through most phone speakers compared to computer speakers or even stereo speakers you can notice a serious sound difference. Now remember that the Gameboy hardware is from 1989 and the GBC didn't really change much from the original as far as sound goes. Theoretically if you hooked up the sound chip to a better speaker you should get a noticeable difference but then again, I'm no expert on this and this is mostly guesswork more than anything.
