They tricked him, extending his life and granting him superhuman strength and stamina but turning him into an undead.
Since then he doesn't enjoy the fights like before since they are very easy and he looks for a good fight.

Tairyl convinced Hurthur to help her free the Dark Lord, collecting souls with her amulet "The Heart Hex" with the promise that she would increase her power and he would ultimately be defeated in combat.
