There was a mod where one could use a scale slider to change scale, though due to the EAC update that is no longer possible.
Can still upload different sized avatars, but it is often a hazzel to work with.
As for pure interactions with friends and such; still amazing and plenty can still be done if you want to throw enough effort (or money) to make it happen in Unity.
