150 Watchers: 021-022 Spearow and Fearow
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers.
Cajikitty
Last one of the Found community (at least for now), Caji (as we called him) is one of the few people to successfully change their FA username (from caji_kitty to cajikitty). I was astonished to discover he’s… not a kitty! Rather, he’s a panther cub.
Spearow are often portrayed in the anime to behave like pigeons or crows. So what happens if you leave a kid alone with them? The kid will run through them just to see them fly off!
It was hard to come up with a suitable scenario for Caji. He’s very anthropomorphic, meaning there’s not much I can do with “my instincts are showing” or “look at the cute kitty-cat”. His ’sona is also very young, ruling out many of the scenes from the anime. I settled on this after remembering a scene I had to discard from my own stories, where a mouse child tries to run into a group of pigeons pecking at some crumbs and fails to make them fly off because the mouse child is too small.
Having decided on the theme, I had a hard time finding a good reference. I then felt like I botched the pose in several ways and tried to fix it. Then my three spearows flying off didn’t look like spearows (The small one flying towards the camera still registers in my head as a farfetch’d even though I fixed it).At the end of the day, I just need more practice drawing movement
CalexTheNeko
Calex is another on the old list of assigned Pokémon, so I’m fairly certain he’s my 22nd. I’d originally planned another “horseback riding the savage beast” image but I realized I’ve done it a lot already, so instead I wanted to do what happens just before that. (I do semi-regret not showing other aspects of Calex’s character, but I had already dedicated too much time to the “thinking” part of this drawing,)
I wanted to draw the exact frame from The Rescuers Down Under where Jake the Hopping Mouse tames Twister the Snake, so I looked for the exact clip… only to discover no such frame exists; the camera cuts away. In the end I just drew what fit in the space available.
I tried to do a really weird pose with the wings, I think I succeeded with the left (closest to the camera) wing, but not with the right (behind) wing. A similar thing can be said of Calex’s pose, where the way he leans forward to completely dominate Fearow works well with the right (front) leg but the left (back) leg is a little more dubious. I am, however, very happy with Calex’s fingers and toes on this one
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
