Maybe he's not been a bad puppy and the jackal is participating in a religious ceremony to honour Anubis. Given the god's duties he's probably quite serious and doesn't have a lot of time to unwind, so why not give him the gift of laughter through a willing 'sacrifice' so that it might lighten the god's heart?
