I was asked to do a small article about digitally painting Sumi e for Issue 14 of Digital Artist Magazine. Even though it's a very short article, I am really happy with it. Of course now that I read over it again I am finding mistakes and stuff I could have written better. Oh well.
An excerpt:
"Each brushstroke should be as beautiful as possible while capturing the essence of the subject. Some artists take a realistic approach, others more abstract, but the art is always a simple an impression of the world. While this is a digital painting, the spirit of the art should be preserved and you should make each stroke your final if possible. The constraints of digital ink are balanced by the powerful undo and eraser tool. There are a few extra steps necessary to adequately simulate the watery nature of the ink.
The bird is based both on a supernatural, glowing heron of Japanese folklore called an Aosagibi, and also the endangered Japanese Night Heron. He is poised to leave the picture forever, extinct, but the radiant light of hope for his kind surround him."
Created in Corel Painter X
Issue 14 for sale here https://www.imagineshop.co.uk/magaz.....-issue-14.html, already in Bookstores and Newstands in the UK, will eventually make its way to the US.

Sometimes impressionism is more effective than hyper-realism. A certain level of discipline is needed to produce such an energetic and dimensional artwork without unnecessary brushstrokes. I appreciate this just as much for what's not there as much as I do for what's there. It's a refreshing change of scenery. :)
My friend
rah-bop did it for me! I was hopelessly lost when I tried to do it myself, though I was very pleased with my Chinese name when I researched it. And thank you for the compliment! I love this style of art and I hope I did it justice in the rest of my article.
