Flattened toons can take up a lot of space, and this is especially true if you're a very squishy, very spreadable imp - which means that rolling 'em up tightly into a much more compact, cylindrical shape is a pretty nifty idea!
... you might wanna consider rolling them up face-in tho, unless you're keen on listening to them constantly grumbling about their predicament - as soon as they snap out of their daze that is

You're thinking too realistically about a toony scenario; toons can breathe underwater with a fishbowl over their head, or by wearing a snorkel that itself is still submerged. Often they can even breathe perfectly fine in space, without a helmet or anything!
Breathing is only ever a problem for a toon if it's deemed comedic (and I personally don't consider it funny, so I don't imagine my character will ever experience it)
