Ka'ahkai had earned many a scolding by venturing far below the canopies before as a small ha'aowlet, but she had never gone beyond the boundary line. Then, she had stood high above and peered over the branches, emerald eyes wide and reflecting the glow of the plants nearest the forest floor. Now, she found herself far below even the boundary, deep within the luminescent zone and bounding along springy roots that were so overburdened with moss that every step threatened to slip her feet from under her. Though she had imagined exploring the deepest forest many a time, she had not imagined doing so at an aalukris' heels.
Aalukri were secretive, skittish creatures that despite their size would flee from any ha'aowk that approached them. This female aalukris had been known to Ka'ahkai for quite some time, though first by scent as the scout had picked up the unusual visitor's presence every now and again among the canopies. Ka'ahkai had been intrigued. Aalukri did not come to the canopies. As though it could feel her eyes, the aalukris glanced back at the ha'aow with wary blue eyes, the round pupils constricted to pinpricks and luminous in the dark.
A thread of silent voice, a tentative brushing against her mind as the two of them bolted across an open space. ::hurry::
Ka'ahkai could divine her intent to protect them both from the emotions she could feel, a rush of adrenaline shooting through her body as her own responded unpleasantly to the aalukris' fear. Shaking her head irritably to try to dissolve some of the resulting tension that hummed in her blood as she leapt over a knot in the bark, the ha'aowk snapped, "Stop that!"
The aalurkis flinched, her ears snapping backwards to lay flat against her head. ::cannot:: A jolt of frustration followed the reply that correlated to a flap of her leathery wings that put another body-length of distance between them, the aalukris elaborating after a moment. ::this is how we are::
The emerald eyes flashed, her own irritation and frustration rising. "No, not THAT." Darting forward across the vine, Ka'ahkai reclaimed the space between them and was soon right on the aalukris' long tail once again. "The FEAR!"
The aalukris glanced briefly back at her with a strange look in her eyes, the incredulity recognizable to Ka'ahkai in the pricking of the feathers along the aalukris' long spine even with the species differences between them. ::is dangerous here:: Was the bemused reply as she paused for breath under the cover of the thicker branches. Though her flanks heaved for breath, her words lacked any interruption of the flesh and confusion at Ka'ahkai's intelligence was clear in her silent voice. Tufted ears laid back, Ka'ahkai snarled in taken offense and prompted a hurried attempt to explain further, her body cringing submissively in the face of the other's ire. ::the brahragm-::
"Of ME, you cowardly creature!" Ka'ahkai skidded to a stop beside the aalukris, her tail lashing irritably from side to side as she glared up at the much larger being beside her. Her irritation rose as the other flinched away from her yet again, and she mastered her temper with difficulty. Prickling fur smoothed down, her tail stilled, and in a much more measured tone she asked, "You are much bigger and stronger than I am, why do you flinch from me? I can't hurt you!"
The aalukris' alarmed expression morphed visibly. Her whiskers laid flat against her muzzle, her ears lowered. ::ha'aow see cowardice:: Disappointment, frustration, sadness. Hurt. ::hoped Ka'ahkai was different:: Turning away in a quick movement of her long body, Musaamik resumed her dash across All-Hallow's luminous landscape and left Ka'ahkai to follow her, frustrated yet strangely ashamed.
A fantastic cinematic commission I purchased from
sixfoot depicting my characters Musaamik and Ka'ahkai making their way through All-Hollow's depths. An uncertain and fractious partnership, indeed! Why is Ka'ahkai here? What is she looking for? Those questions will have to wait to be answered.
