It takes a long time to get used to drawing with a tablet -you have to get used to the 'feel' of it. It took me a few months to get decent at it -and even longer to get really good at it. Just practice, practice practice. And if you'd rather, you can sketch it on paper and then scan it to your computer, and then use the tablet to do the line art and color it in. I did that for a while.
There are a ton of tutorials out there that are excellent.
What program do you have? I have Photoshop CS4; if you have a version of Photoshop I could probably walk you through it. If not, again, there are a ton of tutorials online -I'd just Google it and see what you find.
