150 Watchers: 029-031 Nidoran♀ - Nidorina - Nidoqueen
I'm doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. Today’s are more from the “I have no idea where they go” group. Yes, that means at the end of 2012 there was another mass “unwatch, rewatch” wave. This one was over some drama with the site owners and people deleting their accounts. So, again, since I don’t know who unwatched and rewatched, I’m filling the spots in with people who I have no idea when they watched me.
CarsonCoyote
Carson is a really, really nice person but there was no easily discernible common theme in his gallery or favorites other than “slice of life”. What would a slice of life be involving a Nidoran? What came to mind was adopting a puppy, for which reason Caron here is shown picking Nidoran as his starter.
There was a lot of speculation during Gen 1 over what the starters outside of Pallet Town could be. People seemed to have a “feel” for what makes a good starter, and Nidoran was a popular choice (“balanced stats” and “cool-looking final evolution” were the stated reasons). They was generally associated with Viridian or Pewter City since it’s the area where they’re most common (the anime created the idea that there’s wild versions of the starters in the woods around Pallet Town and people took that idea and ran with it).
The main thing that tripped me up here was that each reference of Carson’s ’sona was in a different style. It took me a while to figure out the right “level” of anthropomorphism for him. As far as the actual drawing process, I keep forgetting everyone has two arms, two legs, two ears. I Almost posted this one without them!
lonesadwolf
LoneSad is also a really nice person, but the only thing in his gallery is fursuiting pictures! It also took me a while to figure out what to do with him before settling on: what if “fursuiter” was a trainer class? (and no, the Poké Maniacs don’t count)
Having no reference for his IRL face, I just went with the first thing that came out. I’m not sure how I feel as having him basically be Mikey from Recess. Happier with the hands here, they seem to actually be holding that head as opposed to my Magnemite piece where it seems like only the fingertips are touching it (I can’t unsee it and now you can’t either!) Nidorina’s height is given as 2 ft in the pokédex, and I’m portraying her more like at 3' mostly because I wasn’t sure how far in front she was going to be when I started drawing, but also because I’m showing her fully on two legs instead of slightly leaning forward as the pokédex sprite does.
Godhammer
Godhamer really, really likes TF (transformation) pictures. Since his Pokémon is Nidoqueen, he gets officially my first TF/TG (transformation/trans-gender) piece. To meet the "must have an element that indicates who it's for" rule, I added a Weavile (Godhammer's profile pic) who can't contain his excitement at seeing this happen to his trainer, and maybe had something to do with it.
Unlike my last TF piece, which showed the transformation happening from right to left, here the transformation was supposed to start at the hands, feet, and nose and work its way around (you know, typical cartoon TF rule. It’s hard to show too much of it without color, though, and I ended up realizing that what I have looks mostly like a Nidoqueen but with human eyes and nosebridge. It’s interesting, though, that I’m hitting the same points at about the same time in the sequence
Weavile was more of a challenge than I anticipated. I wasn't sure how to interpret the bart-simpson-like spikes at the top of its head, or indeed what the "crests" are supposed to be made out of (feathers? webbing? scales?) I'll probably decide on something if I ever reach 461
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
