The fabricator hummed along during the night as it cooked up another fish. A 'boomerang' fish this time, with him wanting to test things out. He had already tried the 'Bladderfish' and found he preferred using them to make water, and the Peepers were very much delicious when cooked. Still, he might as well try other fish too.
Once it finished cooking the fish, he got to work eating it. Thankfully, the fabricator stripped away all the bones and organs and ensured the meal wouldn't give him food poisoning or worse. The last thing he needed was to end up dying because the spleen ate out his insides or the kidneys caused him to contract brain cancer. He did wonder where they went though. Hopefully, it went back to the planet, so they didn't end up screwing up the ecosystem. Putting aside moral issues, it would make work for his company rather difficult.
With a bit of a midnight snack finished, he took a moment to open the bottom hatch and peek down, looking around. Soon, he saw the little Sea Emperor juvenile, having hunkered down for the night and silently sleeping on the seabed. He couldn't help but smile as he pulled his head back into the pod. Qwib deserved the rest, after having left him ride on top of him so much, as well as the help he was with gathering up materials.
He took mental stock of what he had found while out and about with him before they moved back to the pod at sundown. They found more titanium and copper, for one, as well some loose scraps from the ship's wreckage, for one, which they were able to melt down into more titanium. There was quartz and salt deposits as well that they found, which were similarly stored away.
And, of course, he had gone back into those cave systems to discover those red and white fish were guarding sulfur deposits. Meaning he was going to have to deal with them a good bit more, no doubt... If only he had a weapon of some sort. He'd have to find something like a Propulsion Cannon or Stasis Rifle blueprint if he wanted to deal with those things better.
He was glad his PDA helped notify him of some of this stuff but he really wished it had news that didn't lead him into dangerous areas.
Sitting in the seat again, he tried to close his eyes and drift off to sleep, to get some rest... and felt himself fail to do so. He couldn't sleep like this. There were too many unknowns and... well, it was hard to sleep when he was in a half-broken lifepod. After all the training drilled into him, could he really just rest while stuff was broken?
He moved back over to the fabricator, looking at what he had available to make. And after a few seconds of looking through, he groaned.
He needed plastic for what he wanted to make.

Hoshi didn't get much sleep that night, the nagging feeling of needing to do his job preventing him from catching much sleep. Maybe if he was chef or a janitor, he'd feel a lot better about the state of his pod but he was a technician. His job was to repair and maintain equipment.
Rubbing his eyes to try and open them up some, he got a stored away drink of water to top him off for the day before slipping into the water, soon greeted by Qwib, who had also woke up. <Hey, Hoshi! Are you okay? Your eyes look weird.>
He pet Qwib's head, climbing on top of him again. “Sorry.” he said once they broke the surface. “I couldn't sleep well with the pod all broken up. It's hard for me to sleep when there's stuff to fix.” Looking to the south, or at least what he judged as the south, he continued, “Let's go ahead and check out the area we saw yesterday.”
Soon, Qwib dove underwater, a big field of large, green, kelp-like plants in the distance. They had seen it in the distance and Hoshi figured it was a good idea to go check them out. The yellow bulbs growing out of the plants were also of interest. He pulled out the scanner, letting Qwib swim them closer and into the green forests.
He took his time looking around, waiting for Qwib to slow down before starting to scan one of the tall plants. It was a creepvine, apparently, and it seemed the yellow things were pods. And according to the information it gave him... The scanner says that I can use it to make plastics...! That's perfect! They're big, sure, but I can use this to fix up the pod! He grabbed a few groups of pods, packing them away. He had made sure to clear out some room but he wouldn't have too much left. I need to make some storage lockers later... Hopefully, once these are processed, they'll take up less room.
Checking the oxygen gauge, he pushed off of Qwib, moving to surface for a bit to get some air. Just for a bit. “Should try going deeper.” he muttered to himself. “I want to head back now but there might be other deposits that could provide some useful materials. Not just those limestone chunks.”
Ducking back down before Qwib could get confused, he soon started to swim deeper. He had some extra room to store some stuff away in. Plus, the faster he got a greater variety of materials, the better. Variety meant he'd have a better idea of where to take things for equipment. And more equipment meant his chance of survival was greater. He just wished the PDA had more of its blueprints saved. A Seaglider would be perfect... or a survival knife for harvesting plants.
Looking around as he got low enough, he broke open a few chunks, grabbing some copper and titanium. He didn't bother with too many though, just looking around for anything different. He found a few curved, pointy objects that he pocketed but he didn't pay them much mind. He'd just scan them later.
Soon enough, he spotted something. A more smooth bump, with a darker color than the limestone outcroppings, jutting out of the wall near the sea floor. Swimming over, he gave it a hit with the bottom of the scanner, breaking it open. And soon, he saw a glint of a familiar material tumble out, the boy immediately grabbing it with his free hand. Gold! This is perfect! I'll be able to make a repair tool with this! As he put it up, he wondered what else he could find around here. He just needed to look for the more smooth, brownish-bumps and-
<Hoshi, behind you!>
He turned around, seeing the lengthy creature that had snuck up behind him. One that had its jaws open and oh boy, those were some big fangs! As it lunged out towards him, he panicked, trying to swim back and running into the rocky wall behind him. It got him a little distance, of course, but as he raised his arms up to try and keep it from hitting his face, he could feel a sharp pain as the creature's fangs pierced through his protective suit, getting him to cry out as it tried to pull back on him, to yank him away.
<Leave him alone!> The beast was knocked away by Qwib, who slammed into it, forcing the predator to let go. After the brief stun, it quickly swam away, leaving the Leviathan to swim down to Hoshi. <Hoshi, you're hurt...! Are you going to be okay?>
He groaned a bit, gripping the wound tight to compress and try to stifle any bleeding. It went deep but, thankfully, it didn't manage to do too much damage. He gave a little nod, although he couldn't stop the blood from seeping out. <Let's head back. You need to take care of that. You had something back at the pod, right? You came out of there before with something wrapped around your head. Bandages, right?>
He gave a little nod, watching as Qwib slipped one of his 'hands' under him, pressing him close as he started to ascend. It was only now that he was starting to realize he was starting to run low on oxygen too... This was probably for the best, really, even though he felt miffed about not being able to harvest more valuable materials. At least he got some gold for later...
It took a little bit for Qwib to remember the human's need for air, the beast swinging up to allow Hoshi to get some. Just in time too, as the tank was about to run out. With it refreshed, it was a quick trip back to the lifepod. However, the leviathan had a worried look on his face, given how the wound was still bleeding.
Before Hoshi could get off and try going inside the lifepod, the Juvenile spoke up. <Wait. Let me try something.> He waited for Hoshi to dismount before turning around, opening his mouth up. <Put your arm inside here.>
Hoshi was more than a little nervous about this. Putting... well, any amount of your body inside a big creature's mouth, especially a Leviathan class creature. Still, Qwib had saved him twice already. And he trusted him enough to ride him. So, hesitantly, he moved his arm inside his mouth, watching him gently close it around the limb.
The two floated up a bit, Qwib making sure Hoshi could breathe above the water. Soon, he felt something getting onto his arm, making it feel a bit tingly. Saliva? Or something else?
<There. Just give it a minute and it should start to heal.>
Hoshi was silent as he floated there, his limb still inside the creature's mouth. The pain seemed to be fading, at least. Still, they were probably going to be here for a while. After a little bit, the juvenile spoke up again. <So... where did you come from? Were you on that big ship?>
The ship... He looked over to the wrecked ship nearby. “Yeah... It's called the Polaris. We took it here so the company I work for could look around the planet.” Seeing the light of curiosity in his eyes, he continued, “I work for a company called Starspire. It's a company focused on excavation and exploration. We were really small before the Alterran collapse started a few years ago.”
<That sounds bad... Is this 'Alterran' place your home?>
“No, it isn't. It did run things a lot back home but... well, after what happened with Riley, people ended up finally having enough of things. They were outraged that someone who fought to survive after crash landing on an alien planet was not only not allowed to go back home... but wasn't allowed because he owed money for all the stuff he found and used to survive and get home.”
Qwib looked at him, a little confused by what he was saying. <Um... so he had to give them something that he wasn't able to?>
“Yeah... Sorry, I guess this doesn't make much sense. Basically, he was in trouble for reasons everyone thought was really dumb. And they didn't like it so... they did something about it.” Smiling a bit, he continued, “Alterra was a company that... well, basically ran everything. They made food, places to live, stuff to ride around in, things to defend yourself with... They even had leaders in different places. For a long time, people just lived with it but... well, one of the things that wasn't liked about Alterra was how they always made sure no one else could compete with them.”
<That sounds really mean. So... they wouldn't let anyone else try to do what they did?>
“Yeah, and they really tried to do everything. They even went after small companies, like how Starspire was at the time. Alterra kept trying to buy them out, like they did with other companies like Xenoworx. Always offers of more resources and better reach... but I think they just didn't like the idea of other groups threatening what they saw as 'what was best for the company. It rubbed a lot of people the wrong way and the only reason why they didn't go against them sooner was the sheer size... But after what happened with Riley... people had enough.
“After that, everyone just 'quit'. Alterra saw them all as more employees to control and they decided they weren't working for them anymore. And that ended up including a lot of its proper employees, after they saw how Riley was treated. Alterra thought it'd be alright since they felt they controlled who got weapons but a lot of people had jail-broken their fabricators, so they could just make as many as they wanted. It gave the security forces they hired a really nasty shock. Alterra... didn't really make it out of that affair in one piece. Not only did the company lose the majority of its workers over the whole thing, they were on the losing side of a war. They had to give up a lot of power so they wouldn't go out of business entirely... and they really weren't happy about it.”
He looked up at the sky, towards where he thought home might be. “Before we left, there was a new governmental system being worked out. And other Trans-Govs like Alterra were being massively shaken up too, so they might be going the same road. There was a huge rush to take resources that got freed up and roles that were left open. Some companies like Starspire got popular because they promised to 'stay small', just focusing on what they were founded to do. And... well, the alien planet Riley got off of still had a lot of resources, as well as ruins from an alien race. That's the sort of thing they're really interested in. So... they sent a ship full of people to explore and investigate.”
<And that ship... was yours?>
“Yeah. Didn't expect to end up crashing. We-”
A low rumble cut him off before he could continue, Hoshi looking over to the crashed ship. From the PDA, a notification sounded, saying, 'Quantum Detonation confirmed in the Polaris drive unit.'
“Not good...” Hoshi muttered. Looking to Qwib, he asked, “Can I take my arm out yet? I need to do something.”
<Are you going to try and go over there to fix the ship? But there's->
“No, it's too risky now. I wouldn't have the time to fix it before it's too late. I need to try and let any other survivors know about this, just in case.”
<W-well, yeah. It isn't finished, but it should be healed up enough so that the worst->
He tugged his arm out of the mouth, shaking it off and noting how the bleeding had stopped and the wound was partially mended. He soon moved to the lifepod, climbing up and getting in through the top hatch. He quickly went to work with the Fabricator, refining what he had and quickly making what he had been hoping to make last night: A repair tool.
He immediately went to work, fixing up the lifepod's systems. He wanted it at full power, just in case. Once everything was done, he moved to the radio, turning off the notification about the automated distress beacon, opening a panel on the side and going to work, rewiring it and using the repair tool to help with things. “I've got one shot at this... If I'm lucky, this'll still work normally after.”
Making the final connection and securing it with the repair tool, he took a deep breath to steady his nerves. “Here goes...”

With the message sent out, he turned off that little feature, sighing. Checking his modifications, he saw how lucky he had gotten. Any further strain from overclocking the radio could have lead to frying its circuits. He took a moment to undo his modifications before starting to come out of the pod again. “It's done.” he said as he sat atop it. “I sent the word out. Hopefully, everyone will get out alright.”
<You were trying to warn your friends, right?> the Juvenile asked. <I hope they will too. I wanna meet them.>
“Maybe you will, Qwib. We'll have to be careful not to scare them though.” He laughed a bit, smiling as he looked to his 'little' friend. Well, here was hoping things would go well...

Alright, sorry for the wait. Had to head off for a while to house sit so this got left unposted for a while. And since I realize the previous chapter didn't give quite a good explanation of what I was asking or a good format to be used...

-Attention, all survivors of the Exploration Expedition ship Polaris, this is Maintenance Technician Hoshi, reporting that the ship has suffered a quantum detonation within its drive core. This means that the core will explode and, if you are too close to the ship when it happens, you will be killed from the explosion or the subsequent fallout.-
-If your lifepod landed near the ship, it is imperative that you escape the immediate area. Do not rush this attempt, however. There is likely to be Leviathan Class organisms on this planet, based on initial reports. While I have made contact with a friendly one, there is no guarantee that others will be. Because of this, it must be stressed that you cannot rush this. The explosion will not be immediate, so it's possible that you'll have some time to prepare. Use this to prepare whatever food, water, and equipment you need before you leave.-
-If possible, attempt to regroup at my location. I... well, I don't have a map of the area but my location is near long, green, kelp-like plants with yellow bulbs towards the top. The scanner says they are called 'Creepvines'. If you see them, you might not be far from where my lifepod landed. If possible, we can attempt to find better shelter afterwards.-
-Stay safe, everyone. I hope we get to meet up soon.----
