I’d been looking forward to Cult of the Lamb since the first trailer; I love cute stuff with a dark twist, especially when that cute stuff involves adorable animals. And from what I’ve seen and heard, it’s a great game! I’ve really got to get it sometime; it looks fun! The characters seem really likeable too; the Lamb’s the cutest, seemingly friendliest cult leader ever, Ratau’s such a nice mentor, and I love Ratoo’s thing about his lover literally stealing his heart.
And then there’s the Red Fox.
This guy caught my attention from the moment I heard about him. In a game where you’re already forced into a deal with the devil, deals with a completely separate devil become much more interesting. (Though I’d never agree to his final deal.) I don’t know who or what he is, but I like him; he’s intimidating, creepy, and I like that whole “emerging from the darkness/possibly being part of the darkness” thing. Plus, he’s a cute fox! I just wish we knew more about him, like his actual name; as cool a title as “the Teeth in the Darkness” is, it’s also somewhat of a pain to say or write.
I think this is the first picture of him hypnotized. Hopefully it’s not the last!
The pig hummed happily as he pulled another fish from the water. This made 12 so far! His Lord would be so happy once he got back!
It was kind of strange how He had sent a fellow follower to tell him to go fishing here, and not instructed him in person, but who was he to question his God? Running the world was probably hard work! And there was probably a reason He told him to wait until nighttime; maybe there were really good fish out this late! There were still plenty of shadows in the water! There, and there, and-
The pig gasped as he saw a pitch-black patch of the pond. There must be so many fish he couldn’t even make out individual shadows anymore! He could see all the red eyes glaring from the darkness, too, so these fish were probably extra-special! Praise the Lamb!
The follower cast his line into the dark, and soon enough, something was biting. The pig pulled with all his might, but somehow the fish didn’t seem to be getting any closer. How big was this-
The pig was yanked off the dock, going flying into the dark patch.
The last thing he heard was the gnashing of teeth…
The Red Fox sighed contentedly, licking bits of meat off his face. It had been too long since he’d had such a good meal. His usual haunts were seeing very few travelers lately, most scared off by the monsters or the stories of the Teeth in the Darkness. Making a deal had grown much harder since the Lamb had taken power; having a god willing to hear and help with requests made a shadowy fox seem much less appealing. It didn’t help that the once-little lamb wasn’t exactly fond of him. They’d been getting along so well, benefiting from their deals, but then he just had to refuse to sacrifice Ratau.
Such a shame. He’d almost thought he’d found a kindred spirit.
As it was, he tried to avoid the Lamb’s notice as much as possible, switching locations, preying on lone creatures, staying away from anyone associated with the new god (there were only so many followers that could disappear at once without raising suspicion). The Lamb hadn’t gone after him, and he’d like to keep it that way. Ending up like Narinder held no appeal.
Now, where to go for dessert?
Kaa slithered through the forest, looking from side to side. It wouldn’t do to be caught by monsters; his hypnosis could subdue the ones with eyes, but even that was a risky venture. All it took was one catching him off guard or being faster than he thought, and he was done. He wouldn’t even be out here if he could help it; the monsters might keep him fed, but they were neither cute, nor good-tasting. Unfortunately, plants had no place in his diet, and trying to get fish to beach themselves or crabs to march into his mouth was harder than you’d think. Travelers were becoming scarcer as well, and while that cult would probably keep him fed, he had no desire to try his luck with fanatical followers or an eldritch god.
Still, he had a plan. He would find someone that could survive on their own, and provide him with meals, and hypnotize them. It didn’t have to be anyone special; at this point, even just someone who could fish would do. Perhaps that fish in the ridiculous disguise, or maybe that once-heartless rat?
The snake was snapped from his thoughts by the sound of whispering. One glance to the side and he frantically dove into a bush; the dark was full of eyes, red, glowing, and glaring. He was fairly sure they’d seen him, but thankfully, none of them moved. They faded in and out of view, their gaze unchanging, unnerving.
…What were they anyways?
Kaa narrowed his eyes, and peered into the darkness.
Much to the snake’s surprise, a fox emerged, his lower half submerged in a pool of shadow (or was it the shadow?). “How curious. It’s been some time since I’ve seen your kind.”
Kaa sighed. No point hiding now. “Are ssssnakessss truly sssso uncommon?”
“As far as I’m aware, yes. I’ve met only one other in my time on this world,” the Fox sighed, shaking his head. “Such a shame. The time when your kind were a common terror in the night was a sight to behold.”
Kaa raised an eye ridge. “And you were there for thissss?”
“Some creatures age VERY well,” he shrugged with a smirk. “And in that age, they pick up quite a few tricks and trinkets. Ones they might be willing to part with for a price.”
“I don’t sssssuppossse you have food asssss well?” Kaa sighed.
“Sadly, that’s something we both lack,” the fox chuckled. “Still, perhaps we can strike a deal, my fellow predator. For a bit of meat, I can put you on the path to power. Power enough to make anything your meal.”
Kaa smirked. He didn’t trust the fox as far as he could throw him (the shadows and slit red pupils didn’t help), but he had given him an idea. “Cssssertainly an enticssssing offer… Sssssay, what’sssss your name? I have a feeling we’ll be ssssseeing each other quite a bit.”
“Nothing important. I much prefer the Red Fox; it’s a bit on the nose as far as titles go, but it’s one that’s served me well,” the fox smiled.
“Lovely. I’m Kaa,” the snake smiled. “Sssssay, how about we ssssshake on it? I find it helpsssss build trussssst.”
The Fox smirked. It was obvious Kaa was up to something; most likely an attempt to eat him. He’d only been going to take a bit off the snake’s tail, but if he was going to put himself within reach so readily…
“With pleasure,” he replied, resisting the urge to lick his lips as Kaa drew closer.
The snake held out his tail as the Fox held out his hand, their eyes meeting-
And the Fox’s jaw fell open as the snake’s eyes spun with vibrant color. Every shine, every swirl was a sight to be savored, a feast for the eyes that flickered like firelight. His thoughts grew hazy, spirals sweeping through his sight in a sea of soothing calm; his hunger faded, the Fox filled with blissful, tingling warmth. Kaa moved his head, and the Fox followed the alluring light; a motion, and he was swaying alongside the snake, a smile creeping across his face. Kaa beckoned, and the beast obeyed, the Fox stepping free of the shadows for the first time in ages. The predator’s pupils shrank to pinpricks, drool dripping from his mouth as he scaled a stairway of coils.
The Fox marched through loop after loop, his eyes locked onto the snake’s as his tail wagged behind him. He hadn’t felt so giddy in far too long; not a suffering sacrifice in sight, and still he was satisfied! Dignity, deals, devouring – all was cast aside for the colors; they were his sole care! A scaly tail barred his path, and the beast came to a halt, faintly blushing as Kaa nuzzled his nose; the serpent seemed to have a knack for stirring emotions he’d thought long dead. A coil lifted his arms, wrapped them in soft scales, and pulled the Fox into a dance. He stepped about the snake’s body, stumbling and swaying as his eyes swirled with color. A coil around his waist, and he was spinning with the snake, coils wrapping him up to his shoulders as they descended to earth.
Then the real pleasure began.
The coils compressed, the coils caressed, and the Fox was reduced to a moaning mess. The predator practically melted into the coils, his tongue drooping out as he panted with pleasure. Soft scales, cushiony coils, scintillating spirals – he’d never felt better in his life! A rainbow river rushed through his mind, and greedily, hungrily, he lapped at it. Not a thought remained but of the colors, the snake, and how good it all felt; no meal could ever compare to this!
The snake spoke up, soothing hisses filling his ears as a scaly tail scratched behind them. “Ssssuch a good foxsssss. Ssssssuch a clever foxssssss to ssssstare into the ssssspiralsssss. You’ve dwelt and dealt in the dark for sssssome time, haven’t you? But it’ssssss time for that to change. Ssssssuch a clever foxssssss knowssss a good deal when he hearsssss one. You’ll be fed and cared for, with not a concssssern to be had. You’ll have no need to trouble yoursssself with thoughtsssss or free will; I’ll handle thosssse for you. You can sssssimply relaxsssss, a happily hypnotized pet to your massssster, ssssserving my every need with a ssssssmile. Food, protection, conversssssation, play – you’ll provide it all and more, my colorsssss and commandssssss filling your empty head. You’ll have all the cuddlessss, coilssss and colorsssss you could ever asssssk for, my Foxsssss.”
Tail wagging at warp speed, drool dripping from a dopey smile, eyes whirling with colors, the Fox had never nodded faster. “You have a deal! I’ll provide anything for you, do anything for you! I don’t need thoughts or free will; I just need to obey Master! I’ll be your clever fox, your cherished pet, happily hypnotized as I serve you with a smile! I’m all yours!”
A tug on the neck, and with a PING! and a howl of ecstasy, the Fox broke into the biggest, goofiest grin that had ever crossed his face.
Kaa chuckled as he scratched his pet behind the ear, the Fox leaning into the touch. As menacing as he seemed before, when spellbound and swirly-eyed, even the Teeth in the Darkness was a snuggly softy. He’d heard the stories; the Fox might not have said it was him, but between the teeth and being half sunken in darkness, putting two and two together hadn’t been hard. Fox, demon, deity – he had no idea what the Fox really was, and honestly, he couldn’t care less. He’d be a useful pet either way; he could drag so many meals to the two of them, fish flying through the air into their mouths.
Kaa nuzzled his Fox, planting kisses across a redder-than-usual face, a now stiff tail wagging madly behind him. It was always fun to play with his pets; their reactions were so adorable. His latest servant would make for quite the squeeze toy; he couldn’t tell if it was just the robe, but the Fox had some surprising bulk.
The snake smirked as he lifted his Fox into the trees, his tail slipping beneath the robe for a belly rub.
There were reasons to be afraid of the dark, and one of the bigger ones was color-controlled and begging for cuddles.
Life was going to be good from now on…

Aw, thanks!
The thing is, the Lamb wasn't involved here at all. You know how sometimes the followers have a seriously screwed up sense of humor (for example, asking the Lamb to kill another follower as a prank)? This would be a follower who's presumably aware of the Fox tricking another into getting eaten.
