150 Watchers: 031-034 Nidoran♂ - Nidorino - Nidoking
I'm doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. More people from the “I have no idea where they go” group today.
Raznir
Raz (as we called him) is another really nice person who I haven’t interacted with as much as I’d like (though there was a time when we’d chat just about every day, long ago …I think the chat platform stopped working).
Raz’s favorite theme is one I’m categorizing as “Adventure” (yes, I’m categorizing). That is: the dominant type of artwork in his favorites gallery depicts scenes that suggest a larger story, but not the kind that happens every day. I searched for an homage to that and, possibly taking after the Nidoran♀ sketch, remembered the Gen 2 rival, who gets his starter by stealing it. Dragons steal things in stories all the time, right? Particularly livestock (i.e. animals i.e. Pokémon). All I needed was to draw the Gen 2 rival’s clothes on him! (Raz normally wears clothes) There was just one problem with the idea: it was the Gen 2 rival. I’m trying to keep this as Gen 1 as I can, and I’ve already drawn the Gen 1 rival (not that he’d steal Pokémon anyway). So who in Gen 1 steals Pokémon? Team Rocket, of course!
A few small things were really hard here: first, I didn’t have much “fur” to make “billow” in the wind, and I’m not convinced the wrinkles on the clothes suggest enough billowing. Second, how do you hold a Nidoran in such a way that shows you’re stealing it but at the same time that you don’t want to drop it? I ended up coming up with this awkward hold that lets its limbs dangle. Third: I’ve never drawn rolled-up whips before.
Foxcote
Foxcote’s favorite theme is what they usually call “Slice of Life”. That is, artwork that depicts scenes that suggest a larger story, but only the kind that happens every day. In a world like Pokémon, there are plenty of opportunities for slice of life stories (in fact, the setup of many episodes, shorts, and spinoffs is situations which are quite ordinary) but it was hard to think of one that was very specifically slice of life and that could feature Nidorino (Nidorino can’t, for instance, help with the housekeeping like Mrs. Ketcham’s Mr. Mime because it’s just too small for that!) I also wanted to not be forced to draw more characters (these are supposed to be quick sketches, remember?), so something like sleeping on the couch between Foxcote and his wife was not going to cut it. In the end, I settled on a trip to the pokémart.
You’d think drawing characters from behind would be easier, since none of the pesky details of the face matter, but it’s actually pretty hard. In Foxcote’s case, it wasn’t helped by the fact that he is quite slender compared to the characters I usually draw. The fact that his markings suggest sleeves and he normally wears a shirt over them, also messed with my mind a few times while I was drawing him. Nidorino, on the other hand, I originally thought could stand on two legs like Nidorina, but there is nothing in Gen 1 to back that up. His reptilian nature really only set in here as I tried to draw him stretching as much as possible, which means straining his neck and legs. But the truly hardest part was that stupid exhibition counter: the only part of the drawing I have no one to blame for wanting to include but myself!
Malak1147
Malak is another one that was, for long, the only remaining user in a long list of “watch removed” notifications, which is why he gets to close of this round of “I have no idea where they go”s.
There’s not much in their gallery to go off of; no apparent pattern in their favorites, either; but there is one line in their profile that caught my attention: "I love making cute characters suffer". I took it as a challenge: how could I make Nidoking look both cute and suffering? By losing a battle, of course! I shall entitle this one: "You better sit this one out, Nidoking... or else"
The trainer is the character from Malak’s profile picture. She’s wearing shortalls inspired by the female player character in Heart Gold and Soul Silver (I honestly hate that she exists; Kris was perfectly fine!)
Drawing Nidoking with this expression was fun, but it was hard to get the angle just right. I wanted him to be looking slightly down, but also not too far away from the camera (this is not an angle I’m used to drawing). Once I had the face everything fell into place. The trainer was also hard because I didn’t have much to go on from the profile picture. Once again, the rules of the challenge require me to not waste time looking for references, so I didn’t. I suppose this makes me a Chibi artist now.
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
