here, look at this. only the US version said it was male at all--if anything, Birdo, or "Cathy," was always female right from the start. since then it's been pretty widely accepted that she's transgender, but most definitely female. besides, if it originally did say it was just male, and the translators didn't like that, why would they draw more attention to it by saying it's gender-confused instead of just saying it's a female?
at the end of the day, it's not worth arguing over since there were like, 20 of them in the game and three different kinds to boot, so it's not like any gender/transgender is necessarily wrong.

"Birdo's gender in the original manual for Super Mario Bros. 2 asserts that Birdo is a man who believes that he is a girl, and would rather be referred to as "Birdetta""
i understand it was later changed. but you cant really say he was female from the start.
hes a very very confused boy.

1: I know what the English manual says. I never said anything about changing it later. Like I said before, the original Japanese manual doesn't say anything about gender, so the whole thing is just a result of a mistranslation. I even linked to the article explaining the whole thing.
2: Also like I said before, it makes precious little difference. Both versions are more or less official so, accident or no, either version could be taken as canon.
3: Also like I said before, it doesn't even matter what's considered canon or not, since in the original game there were three different kinds and they were all over the place. There's no way they were all the same gender; just take your pick.
4: Come on, dude. Two month old conversation.

That's funny, cuz it looks to me like you have just given exactly two craps.
And not to be contrary, but I've got a sneaky suspicion that an internet discussion about a tertiary video game character might not qualify as an historical event in any context. Especially to someone who's supposed to not be giving a crap in the first place.
In fact, I'm 90% sure this conversation shouldn't even be possible.

The Tranny thing was US only originally. She was originally called Cathrine in the UK and Japan, I think she still is too.
I know of the game you're talking about. I think it's intended to make fun of people in the US and that game is far from canon since it's a joke crime investigation game made by a third party.
All that aside, I think the US slip up is more amusing and entertaining.
