Sparks may fly when genius is afoot
Kira Sierra got in to the Mercenary's Guild when she hacked their obelisks and put her face on every info pane in the fortress. It was an embarrassing day for the Guild, but she promised she could keep out any prospective hacker who might try the same thing and that the act itself was her resume.
The Guildmaster agreed and she rocket to Redband rank swiflty in the Tech Division.
Then one day, Kristie Sparks approached Aries at the Guild, her body badly burned, patches of fur and hair missing, eyes flooded with tears.
The lab attached to the mansion of the Sparks Family had been destroyed, their bank accounts drained and David Sparks himself maimed and put into a coma. Lacking resources, Kristie had heard Aries speak of how lucrative a career in the Guild was and Kristie, determined to make money to support her dying family, had gone there to do just that.
Aries tried to talk her biggest fan out of it, but the pudgy arctic fox Rathi would *not* be dissuaded. She said she would get in with or without Aries and that determination and dedication to her family deeply touched Aries, so in the end, she sponsored her. Of course, she'd need to prove herself, especially given she wasn't in peak athletic shape at the time.
Of course, that would only be AFTER Aries paid for the best Tengu medical professionals in Galmoas to heal Kristie's injuries and help her fur and hair come back.
Using a semi-sentient adaptive algorithm she had spun from LoreTech mechanisms, she hacked the Obelisks of the Guild and played Electronica music from every speaker.
Suffice to say, the Guildmaster was impressed with Kristie and quite cross with Kira.
He unloaded on the sunny feline, telling her that she could pack her bags and leave, since the job had been usurped by someone better.
Kristie intervened though...
"Woah, hold it, sir! If we're splitting hairs, I used a tremendously unfair advantage! I couldn't crack Kira's security conventionally so I had to use LoreTech to do it." Kristie hastily explained as she saw one of Kira's rare sad expressions.
"You can use LoreTech...? That old stuff is impossible to understand. Not even Sierra here can understand how to use it." The Guildmaster huffed.
"It's not impossible... here!" Kristie demonstrated on her hair, tapping her LoreTech pen to it, staining it blue.
The Guildmaster stared in wonder at the casual use of the arcane technology. "I.... suppose then if you're saying that Miss Sierra's security protocols aren't insufficient to most means of cracking, then I'll stay my hand here. But I want you two to find a way to keep BOTH sorts of intrusions out."
They both saluted and watched as the burly human trudged off.
Kira immediately hugged Kristie, twirling in circles on her skates! "Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!" The cheetah chirped!
"I-I mean... I had no idea that I was getting you in trouble or I'd have approached in a different way... I didn't want them to kick you out! And it's true, I needed LoreTech to get past your code! That's pretty impressive stuff you wrote!" Kristie responded as she reordered her now tousled hair.
"Really? Thanks! It's so cool you understand how to use LoreTech! There's like... maybe eight people around the world who do!" Kira exclaimed.
Kristie was so afraid the cheetah would be resentful or bitter or insulted, but Kira kept being a sunny beam of positivitiy!
"Wanna see it again? I need to change my hair back..." Kristie lifted the pen to her hair, but paused, seeing her reflection in the polished statues in the Great Hall. "... yanno... I kinda like the blue!"
Kira clapped excitedly. "Same! It goes with your eyes! And since you said you're an engineer, it'll go great with the blue of your uniform!"
And with that, Kristie Sparks began a career alongside Aries Passadar, her personal hero, in the Mercenary's Guild.
Aries knew she'd have her work cut out for her, getting her into shape, teaching her marksmanship, self-defense and other tools of the trade, but Kristie's presence brought a calm to her life that she didn't know she could ever feel again.
She had no idea how important Kristie would become to her in the coming years.
