If I recall, that's actually how it started, with pilots on reconnaissance missions waving and trading rude gestures, followed by potshots from pistols, to rifles and finally to machine guns.

Excellent story! The final picture is priceless.

and lawn darts were actually a medieval weapon... when I was looking something up for this one, I actually came across a picture of one... they used to drop them on the infantry in bundles...

And it began. They went upity up up and they went downity down down (Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines). It couldn't happen any other way, and it was the way I remember it being told in some Disneyesque animation as well. Naturally Charley is a bit of a homage to Muttley from HB's Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines cartoon I watched every Saturday.
