Took on a D&D character commission for
tarkustralszar between larger projects and enjoyed the hell out of making this heavy bodied, komodo dragon/monitor inspired, lizardman ranger.
After drawing scales for so long, there's just something so pleasing about drawing a line grid under my initial sketch to the contours of the body, and then just going to town with sketchy scale lies to get him to feel bumpy and cold to the touch. Mixing patches of very detailed scales, then some areas with less precise cross hatch scale suggestions, and then spots where the detail fades away is a challenge I've been focusing on. The goal is to reach a detailed but not overly detailed look where both the realism AND soul of the sketch can shine through. Its a tough balance to strike!
I've been really enjoying working on improving my sense of musculature and bulk lately, looking to artistic inspirations like Taran Fiddler, while toning it away from a strictly humanoid, body builder physique in exchange for some more animalistic features and with a bit more natural body fat present. I've never been a big fan of the hyper-toned, cut, superhero physique of 80's fantasy, personally, they gotta have some LIFE to em!
After I get out of my current work pile, I really, REALLY want to open up commissions again for D&D characters specifically and I'm hoping to get to flex my range of species from humanoid to dwarves, orcs, and beast races!

What a handsome lizardfolk! I love the life you've put into him. The claws, the legs, the tail, and of course that face! I had the chance to spend a good amount of time with a komodo dragon at our Zoo a couple of months back. We spent a good half hour just staring at each other as we laid next to one another (with glass between us of course). I was amazed at how expressive and human-looking his eyes were. What a wondrous experience. And seeing this remarkable fellow brings it back.
I do hope I can snag a spot for a D&D character from you when you do get opened up again.
