"Stay Close To Me, Small One..." (POV)
Arcee looms above you, Decepticons all around. The odds seem hopeless. You may get hit. You may simply be stepped on -- be them or by her -- in all this chaos. Perhaps she may need to stuff you somewhere safe...

You're correct on both accounts. There is a Mainframe action master, though the reference I make of Mainframe is IDW based, and relates to the GI Joe character and his friendship with another transformer.
It might be considered a major spoiler of a sort, so I'll refrain from divulging more information; though should your curiosity be piqued, one can always share via a DM.

It was certainly a huge departure for the character. Given most of my experience is the G1 cartoon in terms of personalities for the characters, Megatron was a tyrant. He wasn't a stupid tyrant, because he at least had sense that if there was a GREATER danger, he would work with optimus after some convincing. Some of that nature showed up in Galvatron at the conclusion of The Return of Optimus Prime. They were enemies, but there was also a begrudging respect.
It's why I don't fault anyone for what they like in the fandom, or what they use for their reference material. Each one must be taken to be its own unique universe or dimensions to appeal to the nuances that is human nature.

Honestly I'd be fine with the story in principle, I just feel it doesn't work in the IDW world since it's got some seriously bad implications, and doesn't fit with the character as presented. If they were going to do an arc like that, it should have been built from the very beginning, not suddenly dumped on an audience. They had to do a lot of ill-fitting retcons and publish so many miniseries' to justify it, despite this same Megatron being responsible for mass genocide on a galactic scale and laughing about it previously.
As for the nuances, to be honest I don't buy the angle from a psychological standpoint. The writers and editors tried to use the communist revolution of Russia as a basis for Megatron's initial idealism which turned into despotism. Except that's not how it works; Carl Marx didn't go from idealistic to a genocidal monster, the revolutionary leaders didn't turn evil. The movement was corrupted by evil men who wormed their way into power and corrupted the system to benefit them. When the movement became the establishment, those idealists were kicked out or assassinated. So to me, it doesn't work for Megatron to be every aspect of that revolution, it's overly simplistic and not representative of how these things really work. If he ever had it in him to be the genocidal, dictatorial madman, he'd never have been the idealist in the first place, and thus never would have turned-face and become pacifist either.
Still that's my take. I get why folks like it but to me, it was just plain bad storytelling.
