150 Watchers: 037-038 Vulpix and Ninetales
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers.
UtopiaRayZexal
Ray watched me on February 7, 2013. It was a very quiet, very sad January for me on FA, as I wasn’t uploading anything getting all my graduation papers sorted; a sadness that Ray thankfully broke.
Ray is a Pikachu who lives in the world of Pokémorphs so, naturally, his assigned Pokémon –Vulpix– had to be a pokémorph, too. I took care to find a reference from the time when he watched me when drawing this one.
What I really wanted to draw was a Pokémon Battle. There was just one problem with that idea: Ray is a macro! Any battle would result in Kaiju-level destruction and I had no idea how to depict it.
I settled on having them knock down just the one building. But which building? I originally wanted to do the Celadon Department Store, but, if I’m honest, the design of the Celadon Department Store is boring. I eventually remembered the Silph Co building’s role in Super Smash Brothers, and used that one. The building is depicted from its side so I did have to make some things up. Don’t worry, it’s only Team Rocket in there. 😜
There were several things I tried with this one. First was giving them a summer coat (i.e. de-fluffy-fying them. Second is having the hat sideways. Third is, again, trying to show action: Ray is supposed to be using Quick Attack on Vulpix. And finally, was the actual interaction: Ray’s pounce landing his hands on Vulpix’s shoulders to ensure it knocks the building over. None of these things had I properly tried before. And I’m not sure if I succeeded.
Mikey777
Mikey watched me on February 8 and I very vividly remember instantly checking what his assigned Pokémon would be, and lamenting that the result wasn’t him being able to be his own Vulpix. However, Fangthefox has proven to be the perfect inspiration for what to do with him. And I think you’ll agree this is a much better idea.
I tried drawing Ninetales as I did last time, by grouping the nine tails into three groups of three. I couldn’t find a good reference for what Ninetales looks like in ¾ view, nor have I ever drawn this sort of “stepping away from the crib” walk before. Still, I think where it matters, I succeeded, for it really does look like she is holding Mikey close.
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
