It was done with ambient occlusion (Really basic attempt at getting a crappy low-res occlusion map from a Minecraft block-man made in Blender). 'Twas fun and difficult getting it in the res that I was limited to (I would like to have twice as many pixels in terms of width and height to work with) but it wasn't that much of a problem.
