“Coming! Just a moment,” he called and pushed back from his desk.
In two strides, he was at the door and cracked it open. The lamp outside didn’t reveal anyone, so he opened the door the rest of the way, poking his head out into the cool night and sniffing at the air as he looked around. Just as he realized he could smell the scent of ginger and fresh bread, the soft sound of stifled laughter caused him to look down.
Standing just barely to his belly and holding a small basket of food was a snow leopard, wearing a scarf against the early autumn chill in the mountains.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m all the way down here, way to rub it in-!” he laughed; “Brought ya somthin’ to eat, since you never showed up this week!” A smile parted his muzzle as he spoke, waving the basket up over his head as if to taunt with it.
“I see! Now especially! And not a moment too soon, Norm, I was just realizing I missed a meal...” Rhew began, stepping out of the door and motioning his friend inside, “and half a day all at the same time. What brings you all the way out here, and so late at that?”
“What? I can’t just come to check in on a friend for fun?… And then ask to spend the night because I forgot how long of a hike it was?” Norman asked as he padded across the wooden floor to the desk and set his basket on it.
Rhew chuckled and looked about his space. For him, it was a relatively small cabin: his bed, chest, and a door took up most of one wall, with a sink, stove, and chop block taking up the other short wall. Bookshelves and an extended workbench strewn with plants, fungi, and alchemical apparatuses dominated the longest wall, while another set of bookshelves and a pantry shared a wall with the door. That left enough room in the middle for a good sitting chair by his hearth, a dining table for himself, and his writing desk and lamp.
“Well sure! You’re always welcome to swing by... Hope you don’t mind if I eat something real fast, though.” Rhew answered.
He stepped up behind the snow leopard and plucked the basket off the desk. He could hold the contents in one claw and realized that even if he scarfed the basket down with it, he’d still be making himself something more filling. As if in agreement, his stomach growled again.
“So, whatcha been working on today?” Norman asked, having reached up and grab a corner of the last page and pull it down to himself so he could read it.
“Oh, just some notes on some changes I made to my brewing process. I think I’ve stumbled on a better way to brew up some Miner’s Sight; I just made a batch that filled a whole extra bottle compared to the old one!”
“... Ahuh! Well, that’s good to hear then!”
“It is...” he said, letting out a sigh as he noted his friend’s eyes glazing over, “I’m writing it for the alchemist near that spa of yours, not to be shared around for entertainment.” he explained.
Norman stuck the end of his tongue out at the dragon, then pushed the page up onto the desk and stepped in to give him a hug.
“I’m sorry, I’m sure you find it really interesting...” the cat said, voice muffled a little by the dragon’s leathery belly.
Before he could respond, his stomach grumbled at the little leopard, who pulled his head back to give the dragon a scrutinizing squint.
“Weren’t you going to eat something?”
“Well I was, then... Ya know what, I still am.” Rhew answered.
