Cadet Sergeant Kholyawsky-Gunn, 1931
"The Boston Military School for boys was founded by Major Alfred T. Roberts, a veteran of the 370th Infantry Regiment, who felt that New England needed a military institute that catered to youth from a more diverse set of talent. While the school had its fair intake of Brahmins and new money, it also had a significant cadre of working-class boys who were awarded scholarships. With instructors provided by the National Guard and the state militia, boys who attended the school received a military-style education in preparation for careers in the military. Duncan Kholyawsky-Gunn became a cadet at the institute in 1929 at the age of 16, and was Sergeant for K Company by 1930. Here he can be seen modelling the institute's full-dress uniform. In sharp contrast with most other military academies, Boston Military School viewed itself as embodying the egalitarian values of the Civil War-era, with an emphasis on racial inclusivity, physical culture and moral improvement. Cadets were taught not only how to be soldiers, but also how to behave like gentlemen. With this mind, the Confederate-style grey uniform was rejected in favour of the navy-blue cloth of the Union Army."
