The world of Srreesh is a shining one, brimming with magic, gods, and abundant life. Magical energy permeates it all!
There are two known types of magics. Elemental and Arcane.
Elemental magic, that which makes up the foundation of the very planet and those who walk upon it. To manipulate elemental energy/magic is to manipulate the threads that underlay the world. Reshaping and bending the essence of the world to your will.
Composed of Water, Earth, Wind, Fire, and Storm magic.
Every living being on Srreesh is born with what is known as an "Elemental Attunement." A certain leaning that they have toward one element over others, typically determined by parentage, and additionally influenced by environmental factors such as natural features or presence of a magical hotspot.
Attumement has little effect on day to day life, save for things such as environment preference, the odd physical boost, etc etc. But for those with an affinity for casting, Attunement is everything. It determines just what magic they can practice, and prevents them from casting other elements. One may be born with a greater or weaker attunement, but this connection can be strengthened though practice and a regimen of what is commonly called "Immersion." Surrounding oneself with elementally charged crystals for extended periods of time.
For some, those seeking power for one reason or another, there are ways to change or even gain an additional attunement... Submersion. A nominally similar practice to Immersion, but with crystals charged with the target element. The required quantities of energy are typically too much for a normal dragon to handle, and it is a seldom used practice outside of mage conclaves, reserved for only their most promising acolytes.
The final thing that must be understood about Elemental magic is that controlling the elements is not a joke, nor is it something done lightly. Perhaps you could move a pebble, or spark a fire with but a word. But the real magic, the serious magic. That requires a Focus item, typically matching your element. Words of power can help boost spells or even be used to prepare complex spells in advance. It matters little what the words say, so long as they are spoken with precise intent, and strength of will.
Arcane (Or Soul, to those more learn-ed), is understood to be the amalgamation of all the elements that make up a living being and their soul. To use soul magic is to draw upon one's own inner strength to conjure of helpful objects, among other applications. It is also one of the rarest forms of magic as it does not come easily to most peoples of the known world, except for, strangely, the Ar'bou.
Unlike Elemental magic, Arcane magic stands apart as it draws from pure energy. It can be taught to anyone, with much patience and time. Though to master it can take a lifetime.
Through the use of Soul Magic, many things can be accomplished. Links of trust can be established between people. This link can be used to impart ones on strength on a trusted friend, collegue, etc. Used to share thoughts, or given enough power, to even temporarily change one another, though this level of trust is usually only found in mates. Additional applications of Arcane magic include the infusing of strength or will into an item via enchanting, greatly enhancing items. Or even magically refining materials and even imbuing of crystals! Though any mage can do that, Arcane magic can feed the mana reserves of any element.
Can be cast without a focus or runes to perform simple spells, but are greatly enhanced by the presence of either.
While Arcane nominally refers to Soul magic, there are more specific branches of it; Those being Verdance, and Umbral.
Verdance refers to the detection and manipulation of Life and Death. It is a special gift held by the Akaalii, children of Mort and Gaia. Most of their kind are thankful they do not know how to tap into this power, but those who do... Are more attuned to both the joys and pains of the endless cycle than most.
Umbral... The tainted legacy of the invaders from the stars. Umbral magic, colloquially known as Umbral Affliction, is so named after the terrible hunger that sought to consume the world, due to striking similarities. While not fully understood, it is hypothosised to be power derived from the Second Life. First noted by historians and later recognized by scholars as the source of power for "drowned souls." Unlucky spirits who could not find rest for one reason or another, and were transformed in the deep dark waters of the afterlife, only to return to haunt the living. Why is it listed as a magic? Because there are those.... Foolish? Demented? Or perhaps simply greedy. Folk who seek to strengthen themselves beyond mortal limits. Through some means, they take that unnatural strength of undeath for their own.
But there are still many mysteries left to be solved. Like, how did elemental magic come to be in the first place? How could something as mundane as the ground, or air, or waters become imbued with such energies? Why are the people of the world so restricted in what they can cast, when all beings are made of the same stuff, more or less? And how is it that the Primordials came to be living founts of it? Able to manipulate and shape the world as easily as one might take a single step? It is said that the sources of all magic comes from the Primordials. But who is to say? There are other gods in this world. Gods born of faith, and born of those selfsame elements that make up the world. Perhaps time will tell. Perhaps not.
