Three and a half years is a pretty long time to be living as a pooltoy, and yet somehow, Bubblegum had made it work. After accidentally getting its soul indefinitely bound to a squeaky dragon pooltoy in the likeness of a 3D platformer mascot, Bubblegum - who was basically forced to adopt the name of said mascot - wasn’t sure what it was going to do, but it turns out, being a squeaky little critter wasn’t all bad. Sure, it was mute, and it had no fingers, hence no dexterity whatsoever, and it couldn’t tell anyone its own name, let alone what had actually happened to it, so it was occasionally frustrating only being seen as a sentient pool creature, and treated like one by most people. But it was also kind of fun! Not the most desirable way to live, but… fun! Being small, bouncy and somewhat malleable had its advantages.
A pooltoy body was still a very cumbersome form to be trapped in, though, so Bubblegum continued to look for ways to unbind its consciousness from its form and return to normalcy. Thankfully, the squeaky dragon retained its mana channeling capabilities when crossing over from flesh to vinyl, retaining its ability to control elements, while gaining new abilities thanks to its new form. With not much else to do, it continued its studies in magic, improving the skills it already had while trying to learn others, by reading books at a nearby library. Years passed, and it became quite the powerful little critter! It was even allowed to live at the library, reading as many books as it liked, though in return it had to occasionally participate in scheduled gatherings and events, providing a bit of entertainment for the kids who visited, or masquerading as a balloon.
At some point, Bubblegum finally met someone who could understand its plight - a young raccoon named Remy. Remy, who was bisiting the library, was curious about the sentient toy and began pressing it with question after question, eventually learning that Bubblegum was once something other than a pooltoy, thanks to having been in multiple baleful situations themself. Remy learned that Bubblegum did enjoy its squishy form, but longed to return to normal, and without even thinking for a moment, the raccoon said, “can’t you just cast some sorta, I dunno, transformation spell on yourself?”
…Somehow, Bubblegum had never thought of that. Hopefully that wasn’t a sign that being a literal airhead wasn’t slowly turning it into a metaphorical one. Nonetheless, the dragon agreed, and as Remy left, it got to work.
Unfortunately, Bubblegum discovered something about itself that would make this impossible. With the presence of a magically-inclined soul inside the pooltoy, its vinyl skin was resistant to magic, and every spell it tried to cast on itself would simply dissolve upon contact, or bounce off its rotund form. Remy’s suggestion was a no-go, and it remained stuck.
A few months passed, with Remy visiting Bubblegum in the library every now and then, even bringing their partners Ryker, a drake, and Beau, a rabbit, along a few times. Bubblegum was happy to have someone to relate to, and Remy loved chatting up a one-sided storm with the little toy, who was always eager to listen. With every visit, the pooltoy seemed more and more cheerful, and perhaps even a little cheeky, as it would tackle Remy, give them playful baps, and even fling weak spells at them if they were being cheeky back. Even though it still wanted to escape its form, it chose to embrace it, rather than let it bring it down.
Soon, Bubblegum would start visiting Remy, and they’d all have fun hanging out, watching movies and such. Once they were all friendly enough towards each other, the pooltoy decided that it was time to pull a prank on them.
One day, Remy invited both Bubblegum and another friend, a shark named Deacon, over for what was described as “shits and giggles.” As all five gathered in the living room, Bubblegum sprung into action, whooshing itself into the air with a quick gust of wind, and pointing its bappy dragon paws at the others, unleashing a bright pink ray upon them. The others stood stunned as the blast engulfed them, not sure how to react, but before anyone could say or do anything, they felt their bodies tingle, rapidly changing before their very eyes.
Beau felt his body compacted, watching his torso turn to glass as a liquid swished around inside. His head flattened out to form a lid of sorts, while his right arm formed a spout, and his left paw fused to his hip to become a handle. His legs retracted into his body to form a round base, made of stainless steel.
Ryker felt everything above his hips melt into each other, quickly turning to fabric. His legs were forcefully splayed out, turning to small stumps of wood, and his tail followed suit, forming three wooden legs for which his strange, cushiony body sat upon.
Deacon felt like someone was grabbing him from both sides, squishing his arms into his body until they had melded with his torso. His legs fused together in a similar fashion. He felt his mouth forced open, his teeth growing outward until they were fine white bristles, as other features disappeared from his form to make way for smooth red plastic.
Remy was the last to change, feeling their mouth shoot outward, forming a round glass object of some sort. They felt their arms and legs fused to their sides as Deacon did, before their tube-like body split apart and formed into two poles, connected by their hips, which formed an elbow joint. They panicked as they watched their feet grow outward and form into a base with a single button on it, and feeling their tail stretch out to become some sort of cord that swayed lifeless lay under their now floating body.
And with one last magical “poof!!”, the four collapsed to the floor. Where the four once stood, unassuming objects took their place. Beau, once a handsome bunny, now an electric kettle. Ryker, the fierce desert drake, reduced to an ottoman, a mere footrest. Deacon, the proud, tall shark, proud and tall no more as a toothbrush. And Remy, the raccoon who once could find the light in even the darkest of times, now a source of light themself as a desk lamp.
