Robyn takes him to Kohaku to find out what spirit possessed him and reveals it was a vengeful bat that was once worshipped by villagers from ancient times as the god, Camazotz. Due to their faith allowing to bat to become somewhat of a minor god with the image of Camazotz, its spirit upon death has made it powerful to allow itself to possess people. Kohaku sealed the spirit inside the wooden idol and hid it away before it made its way to Christopher.
Under her suggestion, Christopher is left to be in her care until she can carve a new idol to reseal the spirit, as the wood of the previous idol had aged. One day while visiting the nearby town of Henkei with Robyn, Christopher was first exposed to blood and becomes monstrous and aggressive, causing a rampage. Kohaku arrives in time to reseal the spirit but Christopher, in his feral state, destroys the idol. Unable to craft another idol in time, Robyn and Kohaku use a spell to make Christopher into a living idol and shrine to the spirit, allowing him to regain his control.
Due to the spirit now forever tied to him, Christopher remains to live with Kohaku.
