Earlier this year I started making a new version of my padded cell in Shade 8, and I have got it to a more or less satisfactory level.
The way I made the old version was to take a square mesh grid and a simple sphere, then, using Poser's cloth function I clothified the square and used the sphere to depress the center of the square, getting the indent effect seen on the left. Then I just took that square and cloned it, making a wall, then I put the walls together.
For the new version, I made the padded square patch entirely in Shade 8 with a curved surface, defining each crease and curve, then cloned them into a flat wall, rotating some of the squares so they don't all look too identical. Also, as you can see, at the corners I added an extra mesh that curves outward, making the walls run together better. However, you can still see a line where the curved edges meet the flat part of the padding, so I have to blur that region in Photoshop to make it look better. I'll work on fixing that in version 3.
Also, of course, I added a door although It started getting extremely complicated to make the padded texture on the door so I left it flat. I'll deal with that next year.
I'm pretty sure this is an improvement. Also, ignore the color difference as I rendered the old one with a slightly yellowish "warm" light and I rendered the new one with pure white light.

I'm with you there, in a way. I actually like them both a lot, and wouldn't really be able to select a favorite - they're both nice, but also too different to really compare -, but my first thought was that the old one seemed closer to the idea of what a padded cell should look like that I've got in my head.
But that said, I *do* like them both, and it's obvious that you put quite some effort into the new one. *smiles*

the first one was a lot easier to do, but its main problem was that it is on a square mesh, and if it is rendered up close you can actually see the blockieness around the indents. Also, another big problem with the first one was that the buttons go right to the corner and I didn't make any sort of junction for the corners, I just ran each wall overlapping the next.
I know whats different about the first one is the padding looks thicker, or deeper, and I wasnt sure how to get that look for the new one.

Mmm, yeah, that's definitely part of it. As
kyroraz said, it just looks "softer", somehow.
Don't worry about it, though. :)

I know what you mean... but my problem with the old one was that it didnt really look very realistic, so I went for this new one. I know what you mean, the creases and the lines are much sharper but im going to work on a version 3 that is a nice middleway between the two
After I looked at it for a bit, I think I've identified it.
The old one looks used, looks more natural, looks less clean. The other one looks pristine, shiny, and like ... well, like something that couldn't exist because of it's perfection. I think wabi sabi works here or at least in this old and tired lizard's brain.

I did change the rottion of the folds randomly but I guess they weren't diffferent enough to make ahuge difference. SInce they were done as squares with the creases radiating from the centers, the only rotations I could do were 90 degrees
I think I need to make the creases less sharp, a little smoother, and a bit deeper
Moving each sphere a bit does sound like a good idea (actually, they are hemispheres, of course, to cut the poly count in half)

well first attempt i started just last night i screwed up http://i.imgur.com/J6g1c.jpg ... door is to sharp, there are path leakages (causing black spots in creases) but now that i have your permission im going to re-do it with your style of tiles
my tools are all free ... blender and luxrender

yours actually looks pretty good. I am using Shade 8 for the modeling and Poser for the rendering.. but im thinkin of switchin to DAZ studio
The thing is, I was also able to get something a bit like what you have, with all the padding basically one sheet of cloth with indents.... but the REAL problem, and something I found absolutely necessary to the look I personally wanted... was the crinkles where the buttons push the cloth into the padding. Those little radial indents ere pretty maddening to model AND have it look like its still the corners of a square rather than the center of a square (you can see how they tile out by the wireframe shots in the corners

this was attempt #2 http://i.imgur.com/Lctgx.jpg (ITS NOISEY ... only been rendering for a few minutes .. i hope to let it run for awhile if you think it looks decent)
this i used a similar method of making a single pannel than using an array modifier 2 times to make an 8x8 grid than made the door with a subdivited cube
here is the same image rendered with direct lighting (simple, stupid, photon - hit - stop ... no bounce) http://i.imgur.com/OwSEs.jpg
after that im not entirly sure i got the image right ... if you can offer any pointers in improving this that would be great ... id love to start making stock backgrounds for all others to use
i need practice but i RELY on requests that no one is really making for me XDDD
dont mean to seam like im ripping off your idea at all D8
