150 Watchers: 043-045 Oddish line
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers.
kody-the-fox
Kody watched me on March 15, 2013. I at first couldn’t understand why; my art is so different to his. Then I looked through his Favorites and was honored.
Kody’s favorite thing to draw is scuba diving. Unfortunately it was very very difficult to find a reference picture of him for this (this one is on the 77th page of his gallery when setting FA to display the maximum number of submissions per page! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a gallery this large! Thank God for the search function!)
I’ve always thought Oddish must be some kind of onion. Onions float. So if there’s one pokémon that can’t scuba dive, it’s Oddish. I doubt that would stop Kody from taking Oddish for a dive, and with that I had my theme for the picture.
I realize this is very similar to the theme of my last Oddish drawing. Maybe I’ll start a meme. I’ll call it “Oddish can’t do anything!”
The fact that I basically have only one color to work with meant it would be really hard to show the difference between what’s above water and what’s below, but I was determined to do it, and settled on what you see here. The motion blurr of the beckoning arm was my next challenge: it didn’t come out too well but there is motion there, aided by the bubbles. Making the fur float was another thing I expected to give me trouble, as well as the legs in swimming positions. However, by far the most unexpected challenge here was the scuba diving mouthpiece!

I had been talking to Duo (as we called him) off FA for quite some time, but we hadn’t actually seen each other’s FA pages until about this time. Duo didn’t upload a lot, but right before watching me, he uploaded a reference for the first time of his ’sona, Cody. I decided to homage this piece.
I figured a Gloom would help Cody through aromatherapy. However, that move won’t exist until Gen III. I then thought of Sweet Scent, but that one is Gen II. One move that definitely did exist in Gen 1, though, is Sleep Powder. Cody does indeed have trouble sleeping.
Surprisingly difficult here was the floppy ears (which seemed to change the shape of the head) and the stomach (which seemed to make Cody taller or shorter). The left foot, which is supposed to be on its side, also was difficult. I thought I had the wheels down, but there was some difficulty there too which I’m going to chalk up to the 3D model missing some details (like the armrests!)
Alexistoran
Alexis was another watch I was very happy to get. I’ve never quite been able to explain why, but I think I can chalk it up to seeing them in many other places.
There was never any doubt that I wanted to do Erika (the Celadon City Gym Leader) for Vileplume, as hers is quite memorable. There was some question, however, of what makes Erika, Erika? Screen captures from the anime and all of the artwork, didn’t quite feel right. I ended up choosing the battle sprite from the original game which also gave me the opportunity to draw a very unique pose.
Unexpected challenges here were the muzzle and the hands. The Kimono, which I thought would be hard due to never having done it before, turned out to be easy. However, Vileplume’s folded arms, which I thought would be easy, also proved to be a bit of a challenge.
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
