150 Watchers: 046-047 Paras and Parasect
I’m doing the 150 pokémon for my first 150 FA watchers. In March 2013 I started uploading again. I also expanded my browsing interests from just looking for mice to all rodents (or glires more generally) and rodent-sized creatures. Consequently, I started meeting more squirrels.
RufusPatiannis
Rufus watched me on March 19. His gallery consisted mainly of commissioned art in the hypnosis theme. Still, he seemed to know a good artist when he saw one so I was again honored to get his watch.
It was never too clear what he wore when not dressed as a hypnotist, so I decided to go with “naked”.
Rufus likes hypnosis so much, I don’t doubt a Pokémon would become a perfect practicing partner. Rufus is a human-sized squirrel, though, so he has to crouch a little to level with Paras.
The main complication of this drawing is that Rufus has to look at Paras who has to look at Rufus, which meant I had to leave a lot of stuff up in the air that I normally wouldn’t, such as the eyes, and come back to it later. I’m additionally not too happy with the hand he has on his leg (I was aiming for the knee but, again, that would’ve required me to have drawn the knee first, but in this case, the knee depended on the shoulder and the shoulder depended on the arm so I couldn’t just “come back to it later”). Finally, the tail had to be tilted a bit to fit in with the other drawings on the canvas (I draw them all on the same canvas).
Juniper_Squirrel
Juniper watched me just 2 days later, and this drawing is inspired by a specific one in their gallery. Music is really important to Juniper so I don’t doubt they would teach any Pokémon they got to play music (I’ve shown a Cello here because, knowing Kricketune would come in gen 4, suggests that for bug-type Pokémon it is a Cello that is easiest for them to play.)
Unlike Rufus, though, Juniper is a properly squirrel-sized squirrel, meaning Parasect is about 3 times their size with all that implies.
I wasn’t sure about the angle for Juniper when I started, I was aiming more for a half-rotated rather than a ¾ rotation from behind, but, again, the restrictions of putting it all in the same canvas required me to put Parasect not so far to the right. This would’ve meant that if I drew Juniper’s tail fully erect as squirrels tails tend to do it would be a: harder to make out they’re a squirrel and b) would have to erase that beautiful necklace, so I again tilted the tail oddly. The hand holding the conductor baton was fun to draw, as were all the worn pieces of native art, but the left leg was not fun at all to draw… precisely because of the tilted tail. Parasect was not hard, though, probably because I sort of remembered what it was like drawing the last one
As with the twitter sketches, if you want yours colored, or if you want me to edit you in to somebody else's, I'll happily do it for $5 (not counting shading)
