
Bidirectional path-traced image using LuxCore. Two lasers hit the outer edges of a cut diamond to create this pattern of refracted and dispersed beams. I love physically accurate simulations and light is probably one of the most interesting things to play with.

Yes this 100% digital. Physically based render engines can simulate realistic light effects like dispersion, reflections, bending etc.. They usually work bi-directional which means they cast rays from the light source as well as the camera, which allows them to calculate laser beams and complex light effects very efficiently.
However this comes at a cost, since you need a lot more memory. Luxcores bi-directional mode only works on the CPU too, so no GPU acceleration.
I animated this picture too, but at low res since every image took very long to render:
