Repeal DADT

Repeal DADT. This is an essay on a controversial issue that I had to read today in front of my 2nd period Honours British Literature class. The whole thing is pretty self-explanatory. I have a connection with this speech; being omnisexual, I can't wait for the complete repeal of DADT.

The reason DADT is in place is to protect people. If you don't say you're gay you can't get beat up for it, which happens plenty. You might get beat up based on a rumour but as being a rumour it would be easier to get the perpetrators in trouble without being well-known as a "fag" or any other pejorative someone might have in mind.
Even if there were a meaningful amount of people being rejected from service based on orientation, as in if a recruit blatantly said "I'm (gay / bi / etc.)." as opposed to "I'm straight.", which under DADT a recruiter ask anyway -- not a bad thing, this prevents many rejections on such basis, even if this were true, the cause would not be the don't ask don't tell law but rather the prejudice of the individual. Removing the DADT policy would only serve to allow such prejudice to be acted upon more often.
"...being omnisexual..."
However, I digress. If you have some twisted need to shout your orientation all over the place because it makes you feel 'special' or whatnot, chances are no amount of reasoning can help you.
Good luck in life, one who also has the urge to make their username note that they have (presumably sexual) dreams about renamon, you're damn well going to need it.
In before you think I'm a troll just because I have a different view than you.
"which under DADT a recruiter can't ask anyway"
Also, if you've read this far and are taking my opinion seriously, kudos.
And I actually have noticed the irony of my orientation and my user name awhile ago; when I first joined DeviantArt, I was going through a Renamon phase. When I finally joined this site, I used my DA user name for ease of recognition between sites. Only a few months ago did I discovery my orientation.
Here goes nothing:
"Hopefully, the guy who is reported to for harassment is not a homophobe."
Homophobia will always exist just as racism, even if (in the future) not much. Still, to just 'hope' that whoever the complaint is filed to isn't a homophone doesn't cut it. Even the most bigoted homophobe won't be likely at all to flip a shit just because someone claims someone is gay and beat them up for it. An officer persecuting someone for a mere childish rumour isn't going to happen, much less as would happen persecuting someone for actually being gay and blabbing so openly.
"Plus, I think the army will use the harassment policy in cases of homophobic harassment."
However, that would be after the fact. It would be much better to not have the harassment in the first place, achieved by not being allowed openly say your sexuality. Keep in mind this goes for straights too.
"...I don't think DADT was made as a form of protection as much as a way for Clinton to stay on the good side of the conservatives."

Being ironic isn't the same as being the "Look at me! I'm [orientation here]! Wooo!" type of person that, every 4 years, manages to put the LGBT rights movement back by 5 years. Good luck with that, by the way.
Not to change the subject: I'm glad you commented. The internet needs more politically/ideologically-centered conversations like this and less Twitter messages about going to the mall.
