Actually, a wag is generally supplicative- To indicate wanting something.
A dog wishing to be treated kindly or begging for food, for example, will sometimes wag their tail- And I will give you that a dog excited about being pet or played with will wag their tail because they want you to keep going.
"Smiling" is more about reading body language- For example, contentment can be seen in relaxed posture, ears neither perked up or pulled back, the corners of the mouth not being pulled back with tension, and a lack of overall tension in the back, legs and neck as well as no bristling.
Dogs don't really do "smiling", but as one who owned dogs once, I can say they do "happy".

Anyway, Butter has a pouch like the rest of her species, and probably grew up taking naps in her Sister's pouch as a wee rumbah. ^^
