The Team of the Highlands (Chapter 3: Escape)
*This is the final part of this three part story. Make sure you read chapters one and two before reading this.*
Forrest had certainly seen better days. His reckless behavior in an attempt to rescue his Boltund friend had resulted in himself also being captured. He sat in Team Charge’s main processing facility in their HQ, held tight by shackles that restrained him far too much to be able to act at all. He couldn’t even speak, as his mouth was clamped shut. And it was cold in the room he was in. Even if he could move, the cold temperature wouldn’t really be playing to his strengths. All he could do was sit there, watching Team Charge abuse more innocent Pokémon, forcing far too much voltage through them, and even feeding them these strange red candies.
“I’ve failed you, Sirena…” he thought to himself. “If you can hear me, somewhere, I’m so sorry…”
But the battle had not been lost yet. As Forrest lay helpless in restraints, Sirena and Octana devised the perfect rescue operation to get Forrest and Sparky back home to safety. They would not rest until they were home. They were going to infiltrate Team Charge HQ, and they were either going to leave with Forrest and Sparky, or not at all.
“So their Pokémon have excess electricity running through them, and they must have some substance of sorts to make them grow to a much larger size…” Sirena was curious.
“That’s what we can infer,” said Octana. “But we don’t know what it is that has allowed these transformations.”
“Oh, but if we can get our hands on what it is, we may be able to use it for ourselves!”
“Whatever it is that made them bigger, yes, but we could see very well that the giant Pokémon were in a lot of pain from the excess voltage.”
“Then it’s decided. Once we get Forrest and Sparky back, we can try to find what it is that has caused their growth. I am curious to see it.”
“On a related note, Garnet was able to make a small device that would route the excess electricity away.”
Octana pulled out what looked like a small power bank and showed it to Sirena.
“If what the professor said was correct,” said Octana, “This will attract the electricity and then dramatically lower the voltage and current when inside before letting it back out at much safer levels.”
“Nice!” exclaimed Sirena. “So what’s the game plan for the rest of us?”
“Let me think…”
Octana spent a couple minutes mapping out a sustainable strategy. “Okay. You, Cruze, and I will go by sea, and Courage will carry Joker and Vyper and go by air. We will need to find a suitable way inside, but from there if we can find a map we may be able to find where Sparky is being held. Forrest is most likely there too, so we need to be prepared to save him too.”
“Should any of the other Pokémon attack us, we use this router to take their electricity away to make it easier for us, but we still have their massive size to contend with…”
“That’s why I want to see if we can use whatever it is that made them grow, “ said Sirena. “If we can’t shrink them back down then our only option is to grow in order to fight back.”
“Jeez, some of us are already pretty big…”
“Well, looks like we’re ready. Shall I go get the others?” asked Sirena.
“Yes.”
At sundown they began to make their move. They were going to end this conflict once and for all, even if it hurt in the process. They were not going to disappoint the professor. Courage took to the skies with Joker and Vyper, while Cruze carried Octana and Sirena swam with them. Both groups found a way in, and each member carried a router with them to divert the excess electricity. There was no turning back now. It was do or die.
Sirena’s group got in through the basement, and entered the control room. Immediately they found a map leading to the test chambers. That was where Sparky and Forrest were, but it was heavily guarded. Octana split from Cruze and Sirena and made her way into the vents, holding her router and sapping the electricity from the surrounding Pokémon to bring them down to safer levels.
She made her way into the test chambers, where she saw the most harrowing scene she had ever witnessed. Every Pokémon inside was in shackles, there were chambers of a bubbling red liquid lining the room, and some sort of conveyor belt with what looked like spray bottles was running between each one. She saw each Pokémon being sprayed with this substance and shortly afterwards growing in size, in addition to being pumped full of way too much voltage. And it wouldn’t be long until Sparky joined them.
Octana then kicked open the vent and threw the door at one of the guards inside. While there was no pebble, she made do with the metal bolts holding the door in place, and sent a Pyro Ball bouncing around the room, breaking some of Forrest’s restraints in the process.
“Whoa!” Forrest was shocked at what he was seeing. “Octana?!”
“Yep, it’s me!” Octana replied.
“Well, thanks!”
“So I found out what made all of the-“
“Yep. I was here the whole time.”
“Well looks like it’s time for us to be big just like you!”
Octana grabbed one of the spray bottles and was just about to use it on herself when Courage came bursting through the wall and landed straight into a tank of the growth solution. Joker and Vyper had a bit spill on them, but Courage was completely submerged in it.
“Oh, shoot…”
Octana took off the whole top of the bottle and dumped the whole thing on herself, but they needed to get out of there. Forrest’s growth was the reason they all got separated, and there was no doubt that five gigantic Pokémon in one room was a disaster waiting to happen. She quickly grabbed a couple for Cruze and Sirena and was just about to get out of the room when it started to take effect. Octana began to grow in size, and could now just barely squeeze through the door.
She desperately ran back to Sirena and Cruze, giving them each one of the solutions. As they poured it over themselves, the rest of Team Charge began to evacuate and raised the bridge out of the water to their airship. Sirena went back outside as she started to grow, and soon the whole place began to shake. There was not only a big bunny and sea lion, but now there was about to be a big snake, eagle, fox, turtle, and lizard.
Everyone was growing at an alarming rate, but none quite as fast as Courage. Due to him being submerged in it, a lot of the solution was soaking into his feathers, making him grow even faster. Within minutes he burst through the whole ceiling as he nearly crushed all of the HQ with his sheer size. He was surpassing even dynamax levels, and was only getting bigger, bigger, BIGGER, and BIGGERER!
Sirena was approaching dynamax levels herself, and went around the bridge, knocking out support after support, causing the bridge to collapse into the water, leaving just the airship behind. It tried to make a hasty getaway, but with Courage now being bigger than most Kaiju at this point, he was able to quickly catch up to them and grab the entire ship with his claws.
Courage was still growing, and so he was able to effortlessly toss the ship into a remote patch of land, crashing it as he watched the world continue to shrink around him.
He finally stopped growing, but now he was far too big to even see his home, but he could still see the cliff it was resting on. He made his way back and made the whole earth shake when he landed.
They had won the fight against Team Charge, and in their hasty escape grabbed Sparky and brought him to safety. Garnet was overjoyed to see him return, albeit a little distracted by the whole Highlands Team having grown to ridiculous sizes.
Weeks passed, and a lot happened in that time. Most of the Highlands Team had shrunk back down to their normal size, but Courage was still several times bigger than normal, although he was shrinking too, albeit quite slowly. Sparky had recovered from his wounds and was filled with just as much energy as he had before he was captured. Everything had gone back to normal, for the most part.
They were able to salvage quite a bit from the ruins of Team Charge’s HQ, mainly the formula for the growth solution. With Forrest, Sirena, and Octana all working on it, they were able to recreate it for whenever they needed to use it in the future. In addition, they were able to reverse engineer it to be able to come up with a shrinking solution as well, which they would also save for future use, except for Octana, who wanted to try out a small dose, and shrunk down enough to fit onto Sirena’s flipper.
But one thing was for sure. Even if Courage was still a big bird, or Octana wanted to shrink herself down, they would still be there to watch the sunrise together. They were ready to have fun, and now it was going to be even harder to bring them down.
And that wraps up this short story. Hopefully y’all enjoyed it, because I sure enjoyed writing it. And of course, the Team of the Highlands wishes you a fond farewell. Until next time!
