"Now lift your leg up."
Sophie followed her stepmother's instructions, bending her leg and grabbing her foot. Almost instantly, she felt herself starting to lose her balance, and swayed precariously. Alex took her free hand and helped her get her bearings.
"It gets easier, I promise."
"I hope so. Do I really have to do all those stretches?"
"To an extent. You want to stay flexible, but don't overdo it. You don't want to hurt yourself." She pulled her hands away. "Try now."
Sophie held her position, breath slow and even. The seconds ticked by, a few more than her previous attempt, before she once again swayed and lost her balance. The hybrid was undeterred. "I held it longer!"
"You sure did!" Alex smiled.
Some girls are dance girls, other girls are horse girls. Sophie? Chose both! I've been liking the idea of Alex having a dance background more and more; originally it was theatre, but no reason she couldn't have done both or switched.
