Though magic as a whole is practiced entirely freely and with few societal stigmas & laws inhibiting it, a majority of families in the magic realm have generation spanning specialties handed down as traditions. The Karmella family is no exception, having handed down their small yet thriving candy retail chain across the continent from one generation to the next with the use of what they call 'candy magic'. Most other mages talk down to such a niche and useless specialty magics, but the Karmella family does well with it's traditions, so the snide opinions of others go ignored.
Millie is the youngest witch in the family, going to Newteye Academy to study the origins of her family's traditional magic and to master it in order to expand the business further. She has great proficiency in conducting a kitchen of tools and ingredients to run like clockwork, churning out any number of sweet treats in mere moments time.
On one fateful dig through the library to uncover any sort of old books or spells for her specialty, she came across a hard locked tome, bound by chains of chocolate harder than steel. Curiosity getting the better of her, she casted a key of various candies to unlock, only managing it when invoking one of peanut brittle, the hardest type of candy construct to make. As the chains dropped, the pages of the book flew open and a pink cackling mist spewed from the interior, swirling directly into Millie's mouth. As quickly as it started, it ended, the ancient pages withering away to dust before the bewildered witch.
That is when she began to hear a voice in her head, clearly vocalizing her annoyance at her spell's inability to fully possess her target. After enough insistent convincing, the voice revealed herself to be Taffida Fondant, an old and powerful witch of ages long past that was sealed away in the book for her crimes. She was the very origin of candy magic itself and intended to return to her previous goal of creating the perfect nation of sugar and sweets to rule over. Despite her clearly nefarious origins and desires, Millie was ecstatic to find the source of her family's traditions and begged to be taught. She agreed, but only on the condition that she also help find a way to safely separate the two as well.
Currently, the two live a Jekyll and Hyde type of lifestyle, seemingly randomly switching between Millie's body and Taffida's augmentation of her body when their consciousnesses shift control. They also have a perception spell cast upon them, so no one notices that the two swap places. The head wizard of the college, immune to the perception spell, has also agreed to help separate the two, on the condition that Taffida teach classes on candy magic as well, to which she reluctantly agreed. Their adjustment to their new life has been rocky, what with Taffida breathing down Millie's neck to do things she would never think of doing and Taffida herself causing mayhem when she's in control, but to Millie, it's more fun like this. She had been pretty bored of what the college had to offer until this point and having an ancient powerful witch teaching her, by both verbal communication and examples, was more than she ever expected.
