Commission for
melociraptor
I have had a crazy week of work, and fell behind in posting these. Going to remedy that now!
As with my last image, where I explained the nature of me earning the permission to create some out-of-context/ordinary images in this style. I bought this Gryphon- and the next one- under the same discussion with the previous "Black Dragon".
While the dragon I had been able to hide behind the fact that a community member had first attempted it (and I am simply following suit), these had to be justified in their own right- and simply arranged that they- in depiction- are very similar to already existing crested-birds, and in the case of this image, you see the folded wings on the top hand corners and the talon down below.. you might even just think it was a green palette for an eagle.
Never the less, that the animal itself could easily be a combination of local animals, and that has been seen before... say in the case of Ganukadet [Wasco]. So it's not breaching any gap that hasn't been broken before.
They let that one pass, but it was only after these two that the permission stopped. The final 2 images held an ENTIRELY different battle.... but we'll get to those when I post them.
Second Gryphon coming in about 2 days.

I'm sure you could guess this, but I'm more looking forward to reading the description of your next two pieces than anything else lol.
These were all commission pieces and the commissioners asked for these animals before you presented the pieces to your community.. so what would have happened had they denied a piece? Would you have had to reject/refund the commission?

In the Aboriginal communities there is a protocol and taboos one cannot infringe upon when permitted to carry their cultural observations. There is a strict code of conduct that if you do not adhere to, you are simply asked to leave or not participate. It may be ok in out culture to have little care to cultural consequences, or take everything in the name of entitlement, but certainly not in Aboriginal cultures. That is why I have to ask permission, and even pay a “price” in order to depict some of the things I do. It’s not about being “in a right mind” it’s about being “in THEIR mindset”. :)
The permission was asked before I went public with the announcement. Over the years, I have had multiple requests for specific designs in the style, and so I had a pretty good idea which things would come up in request- usually dragons, gryphons, and a variety of Pokemon are the number one things to be asked, followed by foreign animals.
When discussing with the elders, their main concerns are usually the depiction of foreign animals, the depiction of Supernaturals from other cultures, and the depiction of cultural taboo in the style. So I immediately approached them with the two former, hoping to get some permission and did so. I was actually pleasantly surprised when many folk didn’t really stretch the limits, and did ask for local animals, many of which other artisans had depicted before... leaving me a good argument as to why I may as well. I still had to pay for the rights, and gladly did so... but I had 2 late requests I really had to fight for, and if it wasn’t for an intervention by a third party, would not be able to do. But we will get to that one when I post them.

The thought is VEYR relevant in this cultural practice as we cannot simply "draw for the sake of drawing". We have to justify every action we take, and usually it's either to our mentor, or our Elder/s. It does breed a certain mindset of care and concern that applies to all other aspects of life.. so my other art, and non-art related work also benefit from it!
I'm so glad you like it! It was fun to do.
