Normal Version | Clothed VersionIn my ever-expanding journeys on Sedd, I decided that it was time to explore some of the lesser known and non-major points of interest on Xyrisa, namely a small coastal cluster of towns. What I found there in a cutthroat town frequented by pirates surprised me.
Obviously, in a pirate town you’d expect to find pirates, but what I wasn’t expecting to find in that little shanty town, halfway held afloat on ballasts with buildings moored to a bay, were a scramble of kobolds hurriedly gathering up protection money for their captain - on a hunch, I helped them find their way home to learn more about this captain. I was fully expecting a sea dragon, but was left rather surprised when I saw it was a red dragoness lounging in a pile of her ill-gotten loot and tributes.
Captain Trisha was her name, and as it turned out she was quite the known factor in this part of the world, to the point of being a (self-proclaimed, but also uncontested) pirate queen of the western seas. Her visage bespoke age and power, and her body was marred with countless scars of conquest, a missing eye, and both of her wings gone, though I made a point to not mention any of it.
Her personality was… well, she’s a pirate. She was crass but not rude, and defensive but I couldn’t tell if it was because I was another dragon perceived as a territorial threat, but her words dripped with veiled threats even as we diffused any tension and started to talk politely. She clearly didn’t see me as an issue though, and when I was made aware of just how many kobolds she had at her service I realized why - with that many kobolds packing heat even dragonscale would give eventually, especially with a few with cannons aimed in my direction ‘just in case’.
Seizing an opportunity for repayment for helping her kobolds home, I decided to ask a bit about the pirate’s life, what it’s all about, why people do it, and why she does it. She was pretty clear that it was a question with a multitude of answers. Some do it for what they called “Romance Dawn” - the pursuit of adventure and thrill. Some were sellsword mercenaries who took to the seas rather than land. Some were Privateers, serving the Xyrisa navy in hunting enemy crews.
Trisha’s crew? Money, cold hard money in a way she found it thrilling to take. I suspect the thrill of being a fire dragon living on the open ocean is part of the reason she became a pirate in the first place. And of course, as dragons so often desire dominance and respect, I’m sure she gets plenty of both.
Pragmatism was the name of the game though. Ugh, I hear that word so much when I have to deal with Vitaen it’s stopped sounding like a real word. But at the same time, I got the gist. She’s not a ship sinker as long as those onboard let them be boarded and let her make off with loot and supplies, she’d rather have a healthy sea trade she can hit at her leisure instead of a no-man’s land of a ship graveyard where she’s settled.
And in her words when things swung toward her crew (which she refused to tell me where she found that many kobolds, much less ones capable of piracy) I could sense a bit of fondness. Clearly she saw her crew as something as valuable as her treasure hoard, perhaps moreso? Either way she made it clear that an attack on her crew is a declaration of war against her, I couldn’t imagine the fury she’d bring down on someone for harming one of them.
Having satisfied my curiosity, we parted ways for the time being. I exist on the other side of justice to pirates, and I could tell her pragmatism hadn’t completely blackened her heart to the point I’d need to intervene - I’m only working off an assumption but I’m under the impression most of the ships she actually sinks and crews she eats are other pirates trying to muscle in on her turf. As a dragon to another dragon, I can’t judge her for that, so I’m content to leave her be.
I swear, there’s nothing about her being a dragoness that influenced this decision.

Say hello to the Captain!
Me and my boyfriend caught sight of this character when Annika was needing money and her design instantly jumped out to us, a big beefy feral dragon lady, rough around the edges and with enough pre-made characterization we'd both have a ton of fun with her. So we pooled out money together and decided to buy the character to co-own!
Trisha is pragmatic but not hesitant to be violent, a true pirate and queen of the seas with a massive monstrosity of a ship and an equally huge crew of loyal kobolds who serve her faithfully. She's earned her reputation as a scourge of the western oceans, but can show a softer (and more playful) side around her kobolds while not compromising her respect and power.
Expect to see more of her before too much longer! Both of us are super satisfied with this character and have plenty of ideas for her.
