I sold my soul to the devil and I came up short. I was so confident - so pleased with myself - as I watched my arm stain his contract crimson. The aged paper lit up and glowed with runes and symbols even I couldn't read as it drank the blood dripping from my mortal body. I redirect my gaze to his face, shadowed in the darkness that seemed to escape from his form and contaminate every inch of the room we now shared. He pulls the contract away from me, raising it up with hesitation that could only indicate disproval. His many eyes narrowed ever-so-slightly and his lip curled; disapproval instantly turning to anger. I swear I felt the temperature in the room drop as I held my breath. Deafening silence now mingled with the blinding darkness surrounding us. I knew I had done everything right, what could he have possibly seen? I watched in horror as his form shifted before me growing more grotesque; bending, twisting, snapping, changing in ways no normal body should be able to move. The sound of a soft chuckle broke the silence, quickly growing louder. It sounded hollow and raspy - a voice that had spoken far too harshly for far too long. I flattened my ears and tucked my tail - flinching away from him - but didn't dare move my feet. Even if I had wanted to, something made me feel frozen to the spot. His laughter dies off as he leans over me - hovering inches before my face. His eyes are locked with mine and a primal fear fills my body. I'm nauseous, dizzy, and my thoughts are frantic and scrambled. One of his many large clawed hands reaches out and in the most delicate way possible strokes my cheek, tracing it's way down to my chin, lifting my head up until I meet his gaze fully. I don't think we can get any closer. His presence alone is enough to make me feel like I'm choking, his touch is commanding, and I can only think about how afraid I am. His voice when he finally speaks is low, rumbling deep inside his ribcage and an odd cacophony of rough stones and velvet.
"Darling..... where is your soul?"
His breath is hot, reeking of stale death and rotted wood. I can do nothing but stare at him dumbfounded. My heart pounds, threatening to escape it's place in my chest.
"Who has your soul?" he asks again, blinking slowly, the pupils in his eyes trained intensely on mine. I open my mouth to mutter out a response, stammering on sounds to try to find the words. My head swims with thoughts. 'what does he mean? It's right here, i've always had it, I've never made any other deals like this -' But before I can actually find the courage to say this, he begins chuckling again. His quiet laugh shakes me like an earthquake as I stare at him in total horror.
"I see. I should have known by your horns, my child. Nevertheless, you still signed a contract with me." He smiles, sinister and sharp, and finally leans back letting go of my face. I instinctively reach up and touch the place he had been holding me - almost expecting to find blood but being startled instead to find nothing. I swear I see his eyes flash with amusement.
"I will find your soul in due time, little doggy, do not fret. For now, I do believe I owe you my portion of our deal"
I've been listening to a lot of southern gothic / americana music lately [ It's fall / almost halloween and just in general great music tbh ] And I just felt really inspired! I've wanted to do a portrait style thing like this for Jasper for a while now and I've never felt happy w/ my previous attempts. I /really/ love how this turned out. This is honestly the first creative thing I've written since high school and I want to get back into it. I've always had plans for Jasper to be half demon [ his "Jacob Sheep" side haha ] But I've never really written out anything for him. I kinda got this idea of him finding out he doesn't have a soul [ or at least not a mortal one ] through trying to sell it off. I didn't really have any goal in mind other than that, and just showing how scary the devil is haha. anyways, if you've stuck around & read all of this, thank you!! It means a lot!! I may pick up writing more / posting my writing if there's any interest!
