This is an interesting take on St. Michael: calm and serene, still no doubt he's ready to smite the wicked in an instant. His gaze is not quite "see through my soul", but he's definitely sizing me up and knows he can take me. Maybe it's smugness, but it might also just be him letting evil know that he's confident of his chances.
