A game of bobstones and this time it's Silver vs Blackberry. Silver won this round; Buckthorn and Pipkin are happy for him, Dandelion makes sure they counted right and Strawberry can hardly stand the excitement.
From the Watership Down Wiki: Bob-stones is a traditional game of rabbits. It is played with small stones, fragments of stick or the like. Fundamentally it is a very simple kind of gambling, on the lines of 'Odds or Evens'. A 'cast' of stones on the ground is covered by the player's front paws. The opponent must then hazard some sort of surmise about its nature, e.g. one or two, light or dark, rough or smooth. If they are right, then their opponent takes a turn. Bobstones is often used to settle disputes between rabbits, as an alternative to violence. (Or as we see here to pass time and have fun.)
A picture commission from artist Kisara Fury who loves to draw WD characters. My favorite is Blackberry and the favorite of a friend is Silver so I got a pic of them playing together with some characters we don't often see depicted.
Watership Down was a favorite book of mine and while the various video renditions increased the popularity of the story for new audiences, each had its flaws and the book was just so much better.

Well, I think that the 1978 movie did a pretty good job of distilling the story in the short running time. Then a BBC series changed the story a lot to appeal to children and the Netflix series for all its extra time added more details but they were not the details I would have wanted and it frustrated me. Until a new movie comes out we always have the book and it is pretty awesome. Not just one story but many as the rabbits themselves tell stories like the rabbit origin story depicted in the beginning of the film. I would have had one or two more of those stories told in the Netflix series instead every time Dandelion started to tell a story he got interrupted.
Yeah, it's a mix but not quite that one I don't think. The game is demonstrated in the TV series so that counts for a lot but the characters depictions are more a mix of movie and book. I have only watched up to the early episode in the TV series that shows the bobstones game, episode 3 I believe. Expect more pics with a similar mix, I will try to depict the occasional character that did not show up in the movie and expect Blackberry to remain male. And yes, Kisara is amazing. Thanks for commenting.
It was the second episode of the series, "Home on the Down" where a game of Bobstones was first played, to determine wear ever the bucks should help Blackberry (who was made a doe in the series as the show was made for a younger demographic and they wanted to include at least a couple more female characters) with the digging.
I know the background looks like it comes from the series, but the rabbits themselves look like they are a mixture of styles from both the first designs of the 1999 TV series from series 1 and 2 and the designs from the 1978 movie. The blend is an interesting one. Once again Kisara did some very good work with combining their looks.
You're very welcome.

Very perceptive, I see it now that I look, for me and the artist there is just the book and the movie but I used the scene in the series for a gameplay ref and more may have come from there than I expected. I am happy with anything showing the characters though, especially scenes never depicted before. Curious what you think of this scene from the book Tales from Watership Down and the first one she did for me here illustrating a moment from the UK edition of the book. I think she just gets better every time. There are more coming.
Oh I am just the commissioner, the style is that of artist Kisara Fury, I asked her to keep the style close to that of the movie but she can do any. If you have a favorite scene or line from the book or movie consider having her depict it for you or tell me as I am always looking for new WD ideas.
Yes, I like to include characters that don't get as much art exposure. My favorite has always been Blackberry so expect him to be in more pics. Here is a meme for you that features Pipkin, it's one I updated with art I commissioned from Kisara.
