That would work, too. I will say that in a lot of "interspecies" children, there race/species of the father would come first. In other words, father is a dog and mother is a cat, the child would be called a dat/dot but, if the father is a cat and the mother is a dog, the child would be called a cag/cog. I don't know if that convention still holds true, though.
