Unfortunately, the time period these comics are based on were, as the tags suggest, part of the last gasp of the minstrel culture. But given that our protagonist is an outsider, he's probably going to react in the way a modern individual would, or with outright confusion.

I think it's more that it's not as light fare as the previous strip series, being originally designed for a print comic book and was targeted at a more mature audience. A lot of people are looking for escape and are inundated with stress, but I do suspect some people are over-reacting to it.
