The air around Zurkie's had a heavy chill. No one had seen Rivet for about two years at this point. There had been rumors that Nefarious had targeted her, moreso than usual, and so she was forced to dive underground. But if that was true, then someone in the resistence had to have known where her pursuers were looking.
Others had said that she had finally given up the fight, blasting off to some far-off planet at the edge of the galaxy where the name of Nefarious was only a whisper. But this rumor too was waved away with drunken laughter. After all, Rivet had believed in the fight more than most. Something pretty twisted would have to happen for her to even consider it.
There was one more rumor: that something had indeed happened to her. Not to make her leave the galaxy, but to leave the Resistance. Worse yet, upon leaving, she ran straight into the servitude of the Emperor she had sworn she would fight till her last breath. Word had been spreading about a new bot tearing up known Resistance hideouts that no regular trooper could possibly know.
This rumor was met with the most violent disapproval, warranting an immediate vacation of the establishment, a week-long bar, and double the bill on anything ordered regardless if it had been delivered or not.
That was impossible.
"Greetings my fellow Nefarians, Nefarious Trooper First Class Rivet here, coming to you live from Nefarious City, basking in the all-knowing glow of our Emperor. To any squishes that hear this broadcast, I was once like you. Alone, scraping for everything I had, wasting my life in a worthless fight against the greatness of our Emperor. But now I'm broadcasting this message, curtesy of his great majesty, so that all will know what I have learned. Don't dispair my metallic brothers and sisters, if I can be saved then perhaps the rest of the Resistance can be saved as well.
It was unthinkable, that TV just didn't exist. It was nothing but white noise. Couldn't possibly be true.
"And remember, you can never have more than enough Nefarious Statuettes in your house. Mention the phrase 'Rivet's been cured' to your local seller today to get a 0.5% discount on your next baker's dozen."
